Yoga Zone - Yoga Sculpting for Beginners Overview

Yoga Sculpting for Beginners introduces newcomers to the benefits of isometric postures and lengthening poses. Everything from breathing to body alignment is taught in this 40-minute session with special attention on contracting major muscles while holding stretches and poses. This program is divided into two 20-minute sets that focus distinctly on the upper and lower body separately. While one segment centers on poses that engage the pectorals, arms, and abs, another concentrates solely on the lower body by working the gluteus, hamstring, and low back muscles. This video accommodates a range of fitness levels and gives excellent instruction on the form and function of each movement. Both workouts can be done in sequence for a complete body challenge, or separately if you are short on time. Although the cues come slowly and clearly, beginners may have difficulty with the terminology and general familiarity of poses. To alleviate any confusion, first timers should watch the video through before attempting the poses. Don't let the serenity of the gorgeous beaches in the background fool you (the entire workout is filmed in Jamaica)--this is a tough workout that will make any yoga guru break a sweat. --Olivia Voigts

For someone who has never practiced, nor even tried Yoga, this is the DVD to start with!! I've had it for about a month now and I'm slowly working my way throught the customized routines. I really enjoy the simplicity of it and the timing. I'm a stay at home mom with my 6 month old son...after his morning feeding I get started with my yoga. It works into our schedule perfectly! I started feeling slight soreness in the area that I concentrated on with a few days and my previous back pain from pregnancy?...almost gone!! Thank you! Decent workouts, bit slow/boring, but a lot of content - Lena, LMT - Nassau, NY
This DVD contains about 2 workouts from 6 of their other DVDs. Production quality is decent & has good menu options including interviews, text about the instructors & about the title disc. Their site at bodywisdommedia com lists all their titles available but only a few video previews.
The workouts are very slow/relaxed with very muted simple music & a lot of narrated info since this is made for people who have never done yoga or cannot do mainstream yoga because of physical limitations.
So far I've only done the following but will add as I do them:

YOGA COMPLETE FOR EVERYONE
J.J. Gormley (50s, thin woman) instructs this series & there is an additional 6 min lesson about the basics of yoga as well as some breathing & pelvic alignment for proper back posture. It's set in a very large studio? that looks like a wealthy, old fashioned library/study w/plenty of open space complete with a fireplace behind her.
GOOD MORINING 25 min: sitting indian style, spinal flexion/extension, spinal twist, side stretching, bound angle/butterfly stretch w/o moving torso, self massaging your feet & rotating the ankles, thunderbolt pose/sitting on your heels, hero's pose/sitting butt in between heels (hard for those with tight hamstrings/quads/hips). Layind down, stretch leg up, out & across, ankle on knee to chest stretch & end in corpse pose.
OH MY ACHING NECK 30 min: laying on your back, arching & contracting back lightly, spinal twist moving knees side to side several times, basic crunch hold for little over 30 seconds, relax, slow stretched arms from outward to upward above head, neck stretching, eye muscle exercises, hands resting on top of head to relax upper torso. Sitting up, contract/flex spine, spinal twist & side stretching. Standing sun salutations 3x (feels a bit rushed), moutain, forward bend, right leg back lunge, hands/knees for cat/cow, downard dog, left leg back lunge, forward bend, moutain. Laying down, bridge pose, deep lake pose/laying down legs against a wall & moving legs wide or crossed on wall, laying down normal again neck rolls/stretches. Ends in corpse pose for 4 min, with her asking how your body is & calling out other characteristics of solids or emotions randomly.

YOGA COMPLETE FOR WEIGHT LOSS
Mary Pappas-Sandonas (30s athletic woman) does these lessons in the same place J.J. Gormley does & also gives a 7 min lecture about basic posture, how to move in/out of some poses & what to watch out, etc.
GREET THE DAY 20 min: Starts with sun salutations 3x, the 1st time slow: moutain, standing foward bend, downward dog, upward dog, downward dog, standing fwd bend, mountain. Taught slowly with a lot of detail: extended triangle pose, extended side angle pose & warrior II. ends with a long foward bend & moutain.
SEATED POSES 20 min: Start kneeling w/blankets & child's pose, sitting 1 leg head to knee stretch, sitting spinal twist. Laying down, suported/modified bridge pose using blankets that doesn't require much muscle use. Ends with sitting foot on foot spinal twist.

PILATES COMPLETE FOR INFLEXIBLE PEOPLE w/Maggie Rhoades (40-50, avg size woman)
SEATED POSES FOR THE LEGS 35 min: Sitting cross legged style, then sit with legs straight out, then back to cross, then back to straight agian & again. Butterfly w/o leaning down, then sit on heels, raise arms up, sit in between calves (hard for most people), raise arms to stretch, then sit cross legged again. Standing w/chair in front, use chair for downward dog, then use for standing fwd bend, mountain, wide legged stretch. Then sit wide legged using the chair to keep them apart & stretch to chair seat, sit w/legs out straight & stretch to chair seat. Lay down, stretch each leg up 2x. Saitting on chair, spinal twist. Sitting cross legged on floor, spinal twist. Laying down, spinal twist w/foot to knee & ends with both knees to chest spinal twist.
SPINAL WORK IN 3 DIMENSIONS 27 min: Mountain, standing fwd bend, lunge, all fours, downward dog, all fours, upward dog, downward dog, lunge, standing fwd bend, moutain, repeated one time. Laying down, cobra a few times, one side arm & leg up & other side, then alternate arm/leg up like swimmer, buth arms & legs (locust) & then child pose. Sitting in a chair, spinal twist, then sitting on floor, spinal twist. Laying down, foot to knee spinal twist, then both knees to chest spinal twist.
WHERE'S THE PILATES?

YOGA FOR INFLEXIBLE PEOPLE w/Judi Rice (20s, athletic woman)
BASIC 17 MIN: Sitting with legs straight, lay down with rolled sticky mat under shoulders. Laying down mountain pose, laying down eagle pose, laying down knee to chest spinal twist, hero's pose/sitting butt between feet (hard for most) & stretching arms up & also outward, ends in child's pose.
HIP OPENER 15 Min: Sitting in a chair w/wide legs, lean torso on thighs then hands on floor. Standing w/1 foot on chair, stretch/hang down, then holding foot pull it back behind butt & then do other leg. Standing fwd bend using chair. Sitting in chair, foot to knee & learn fwd. Ends in laying on floor, calves/feet on chair seat.

POWER YOGA FOR EVERY BODY (Vinyasa flow narrated by Barbara Benagh):
A 20-30s athletic man demonstrates on boring green stage w/barbara Benagh narrating & barely audible light music playing. Use of props is shown for those who need it, but not necessary if flexible.
QUIETING 20 min: reclinging butterfly, reclining leg stretch up & to sides, reclinging foot on knee stretch, reclining spinal twist, sitting spinal twist, sitting butterfly, sitting 1 leg forward stretch, sitting wide-legged stretch, sitting forward both leg stretch, slightly different sitting spinal twist & ends in kneeling.
ENERGIZING 20 min is just sun salutations modified using a chair: Moutain pose, standing foward bend using, lunge, downward dog, upward dog, standing forward bend & moutain all done with a chair 3x. Laying down on stomach relaxing, modified 1 leg up only locust pose, 1 leg & 1 arm up locust, slow tutorial step by step to cobra & ends in child's pose.

YOGA FOR ATHLETES w/Barbara Benagh narrating & same guy demonstrating
STANDING 20 MIN: long detailed traingle, warrior 2, side angle, warrior 1 & intense hip standing stretch.
STRETCHING 20 MIN: all fours, downard dog, standing fwd bend, chair/powerful pose, upward dog, staff pose/sit legs straight out & then all fours do modified push up, plank & then go closer to ground (hard), boat & ends with child's pose.

disappointed - Caroline Locke - Martha's Vineyard, MA United States
I was also disappointed with this DVD, as is seemed to be a popular choice among amazon shoppers. I think the title, "Yoga for Beginners" is misleading, as this DVD contains many advanced yoga routines. Also, on the back of the DVD it said it contained a "Core Workout 20 Min." but no such workout is actually on the DVD!

I purchase the "Pilates for Inflexible People" at the same time as this DVD, and I much prefer it. Although, I wish I'd known that two of the workouts from the pilates DVD were on the yoga DVD before I bought them both.

Too Much Too Little - D. Sherman -
I did not like this DVD at all. It requires too many props such as bricks, belts, towels, blankets, chairs, etc... Each pose takes too long due to lengthy explanations. As a beginner I find this too boring and studio based and unable keep my attention. I feel it was a waste of money and don't recommend it.

Better Sex Through Yoga 1: Beginners Review

Jacquie Noelle is probably the sexiest Yoga instructor I've ever seen. Her personality makes her workouts some of the most enjoyable yoga workouts I've tried. She is wearing a black outfit while working out. You of course, can wear anything you want to wear. Hint: "Something Sexy" like well, you can decide.

There is one scene that could be considered a short dance. It is not difficult, however it will make you feel very sexy. The bare wood floor and sheer drapes covering the window are the basics of the set. Then, you have some plants and candles, a chair, a water bottle and a towel.

Throughout this workout, the instructor teaches sensual and graceful yoga moves beyond upward or downward dog. Horizon, plank and warrior pose will all be familiar.

You will also learn some essential:

Breathing techniques
Pelvic Stretches
Inner-core strengtheners
Body-enhancement positions

What did I notice after exercising?

1. I caught myself walking in a sexy way through my kitchen. Hey, hey.
2. I felt like I had more energy.
3. I felt that my skin tingled a bit and I felt warm all over. (Probably revitalizing nerve endings and increasing blood circulation)
4. My body loved the stretching and relaxation section at the end of the workout.
5. I felt kinda sexy and the feeling lasted all night and well into the next day.

The exercises in this workout will be very familiar to anyone who has experienced yoga. This is mostly yoga, but there is a small section of modern dance. I did appreciate the attention to some of my more favorite poses although I'm still struggling with "table" pose.

Some of the Special Features Include:

1. Better Sex Through Yoga - This section explains how increased Strength, Flexibility and Control leads to sexual fitness. Jacquie explains how these exercises will help you "get into" and "hold" new and exciting positions. I think we are talking about Kama Sutra here.

2. Scene Selection:

Warm Up
Standing Poses
Sexy Yoga Dance
Floor Work
Abs and Sexual Core
Final Relaxation

3. Additional Instruction - Introduction & Yoga Poses

Yoga Poses - This is an almost "silent" section you can watch that shows a variety of poses with notes on proper form. You have to hit pause to read each one as they move through the poses rather fast. You will learn the names of the poses and this will be helpful for anyone new to yoga. This is the section to watch to understand the "sexual core" exercises.

4. Out-Takes and Bloopers - Explains some of the chemistry going on during the filming of this workout.

"Better Sex Through Yoga is an exciting workout designed to increase your body awareness all while seducing you into a new level of sexual fitness."

I also tried the second Intermediate workout and third advanced workout and they are slightly more challenging than the first workout. I love them all!

~The Rebecca Review

I'll Give it the Benefit of The Doubt & Give it a 2 - H. Foster -
I'm an American living in the UK, so to send this back would cost almost as much as it did to buy it. I have not even done this DVD because the sound quality is so poor that unless my TV is up full blast I can't make out what she is saying. If I have it on loud enough to understand her, the music is so loud it's overpowering. I'm giving it a 2 for concept and because since I haven't actually done the exercizes, I will assume some good can come from them. Not recommended.

Big Disappointment - Mamzelle Bee - Michigan, USA
I saw this DVD in a store, and bought it almost immediately. The minute I popped it in the player, I was disappointed.

It's a very boring DVD. Now, I'm no yoga slouch, but some of the positions were a little difficult - but not so much difficult as tedious. The sound quality was awful - not just difficult to hear, but it fluctuated depending on where she was facing. And, to be honest, I can't even remember if there's music.

I was hoping to unlock bedroomy fun, and was left boredly hitting the fast forward button. If you want to feel sexy, I suggest getting another, slightly more active DVD - like Carmen Elektra's strip tease aerobics. A totally different ball field, but guaranteed to put a little spice in your life.

Awful - emily dickinson -
I don't know why this yoga DVD got such good ratings. The sound quality was so awful, i couldn't hear what she was saying. It seemed like it was filmed in her living room without proper sound equipment or something. Also, definitely not for new yoga users. While Volume 1 is for "beginners", her positioning went excessively fast throughout the workout. It shouldn't be noted as for "beginners" if it's not.

Check Out Kabbalah Yoga - Ambitious Beginners

Kabbalah Yoga - Ambitious Beginners Review

This is set just like their Attainable Advanced.
Menu: Play, In Spanish & Bonus Asanas
This is set in a small stage w/Ariella leading & 2 other woman & one man (Diego) all doing the poses at the same time. Each have their own limitations & Diego shows the most modified. Ariella is young, but is very good, she looks at her toes during boat & she can do the wheel with holding her angles, etc. with amazing flexibility. It is all narrated by a calming, but not boring female voice, telling you all the English pose names as well as shown on the screen. Unlike the Attainable Advanced of this set, this has NO body instructions which is unusual. She tells you the name of the English only names of the poses, says it again & "other side" & then the name of the next pose which is when the others are doing it as well.. "Yoga means union... Kabbalah yoga symbolically disconnects the the mind, body, spirit connection in order to reveal & examine our imbalances... thread the needle, other side... we now have the opportunity to restore, renew, rebalanced, but most important, reunite. Now the body becomes a more hospitable host for our spirit...... Kabbalah yoga teaches that the poses in between the poses, are just as important as the pose you're going into. Make this pose your sacred place of inner peace." There are occasionally cues on when to breath, mostly during sun salutations. And yes, it's good to see they take time to thoughtfully go in/out of each pose w/o hurrying through.

There is a 10 minute advanced asanas section of Ariella showing postures slowly like the handstand, tripod handstand, forearm stand, drop-back back bend, wide legged fwd bend into a tripod handstand & hand balancing w/legs pressing into arms (more challenging kinda crow) w/assistance & without. This is the exact one that's on the Attainable Advanced.

This 38 min workout has a beautiful song playing, light-hearted, but calming, positive feel. The poses include:
Chanting Shalom 3x, easy twist w/hand on opposite thigh, cat/cow, table, balance table, thread the needle, plank pose, upward dog, downward facing dog, downward dog opposite hand grabbing ankle, dolphin (down dog hip posture), forearm plank (held for a short time), upward dog, down dog, chair, standing fwd bend, plank, upward dog, downward facing dog, standing split w/twist, down dog, standing split other side, down dog, warrior 1, warrior 2, yoga mudra warrior (warrior legs, lean head to ground with front leg in 90 angle & arms stretched behind), warrior 1, plank, upward dog, down dog, (same thing on other side), extended side angle, lung w/prayer twist, down dog, (repeat on other side), star (only side plank here), (other side), down dog, triangle, half moon, triangle, down dog, (repeat on other side), wide legged fwd bend, wide legged triangle twist, (other side), pyramid (head to knee w/prayer hands behind back), tree, other side, prayer squat, crow (should not be attempted unless have had detailed instruction), cobbler's/butterfly, balancing bear (wide legged boat), boat, 1 legged sitting fwd bend, 1 legged wide angle seated side bend, half upward boat (holding 1 foot in air), seated spinal twist, staff pose, seated straight leg fwd bend, Eastern plank (sitting, then arms behind you raise torso), up dog, down dog, (other side), 3 legged down dog, pigeon, downward dog, (other side), reclined knee to chest, bridge, wheel (should not be attempted w/o detailed instruction), lying knees to chest, plow, shoulder stand, shoulder stand w/bottoms of feet touching, plow, boat prep (spread legs), boat, reclined spinal twist one knee cross over , other side, roll up, sitting & prayer hands for different parts of body & the Hebrew? name for it & savasana, "Now you are exquisitely exhausted, enough to surrender into stillness. The harder you worked, the easier it is to become still. You feel you deserve it..." which lasts 2 minutes. This part has a little bit of a man chanting for a few seconds which felt unusual to me & then goes into a different light calming, but not boring song.

The words said are non-religion spiritual. Just empowering/encouraging you to be more aware of the spirit, kind to yourself, others, take time to enjoy life, etc. Thoughts/opinions almost all religions are agree on. I enjoyed this because of the song, the good voice over, but more importantly, the style/intention. They are elegant during, in & out of the poses with intention. It's held long enough that you can feel the stretch which is about 6 breaths? but also not so long that you are not bored & wondering what time it is. I'm not happy as this is I got after the Attainable Advanced, this is the exact same flow, except much less 1/2 sun salutations & same poses but sometimes just less advanced form. That's what Diago was for in the advanced version.
This is NOT for beginners who don't already know all these poses by name & how to so it properly & have been practicing for a while. IF you had to choose one, I'd suggest the Attainable Advanced if you can deal with a longer session w/more 1/2 sun salutations in between. Check Kabbalah Yoga - Attainable Advanced for my review with all the poses.

Love this DVD - A. Brown -
I really enjoy this yoga DVD. It's the closest to the kind of practice that I like to do every day - especially since I do not like flow yoga. Although I do have years of experience with yoga I found that this DVD was advanced enough to challenge intermediate folks while having enough easy stuff to be good for beginners with some experience. I also find the soundtrack to be very soothing and ethereal. Definitely recommended!

Really good. - Kimberly D. Keane - United States
This isn't an in-depth Kabbalah teaching video, obviously. But it's not supposed to be. And the narrator could do a tad better in keeping in synch with the students, but overall, it's a good workout, and isn't all that difficult. Most of the poses are traditional asanas and the yoga master on the video does a modified version for those not familiar or able to do them right away.

It's a nice blend of yoga and Kabbalah, and a relaxing, yet thorough workout.

Best Yoga Video I Own - Aphrodite - Wisconsin
I own approximately 100 yoga videos and this is my favorite. It is really not a beginner video because there is little instruction for the poses. It is more an intermediate level which is why I like it. This is a program for people who are not beginners and not advanced (I am not very flexible so cannot do a lot of the advanced videos out there, I am also middle aged). This is just the right length - about 40 minutes and the poses flow from one to the other. The mind body connection that is essential to yoga is present throughout this program. I am sick of lightening fast sun salutations or holding downward dog for 5 minutes like you find on so many videos. This program has no sun salutations and all of the postures show modifications if you need them. I also own the advanced kabbalah program which is very similar to the beginners except it moves a little faster and they incorporate the plank, upward dog, downward dog transition quite frequently. I will occassionally do the advanced, but the beginner is my favorite. In my opinion, this is the perfect yoga video for the intermediate practitioner.

Teaching Hatha Yoga For Beginners

There are some Yoga teachers who refuse to teach beginner students. Their staff teaches new students, while they work with the "advanced" Yoga students, or they teach specialized master classes. It is understandable that if you run an extremely large ashram or studio, with hundreds of students, it may be difficult to bond with every new student who comes through your doors.

I know one Yoga teacher who has a strict policy regarding students. They must attend classes in her school for two years before she will grace them with her presence. This also includes making an appointment for admission to her office. As a result, most of her students have never met her, but they have the privilege of saying they attend her school.

On the other hand, a very different Yoga teacher, with an ashram, and an International following, makes time to meet every student who participates in activities within her ashram. She travels abroad to teach, but her beginner students have all met her, in or out of, classes.

Humility is a quality all of us should have. False pride can easily possess anyone who has success and prosperity. It happens to Holy men, who forget that people visit Holy grounds to worship a higher power. Sometimes, the Holy man begins to believe that participants are worshiping him. False pride has created poor political leaders, who forget they represent the interests of the people who elect them.

Beside humility, there are other reasons to spend quality time with beginner Yoga students. Beginners require extra attention; and that makes us think, which ultimately makes each of us better teachers. No two beginners are alike. We could profile similarities in our minds, but there are many differences in the body and mind of a new Yoga practitioner.

When we work with new students, who have unique problems, or less than ideal conditions, we learn and they learn from us. If we work with experienced Yoga students who never need help, modifications, or adjustments, our teachings have reached a "dead end." They do not learn anything new from us, and we do not polish our skills.

When we reach a point where we cannot accept new ideas, or learn new methods to help students, we become "set in our ways." There is a saying, "You can't teach an old dog, new tricks." As time goes by, some of us become rigid in our thinking. Worse yet, rigid thinkers rarely work toward improving anything. Rigid thought requires us to deny change and to repeat the same mistakes.

Therefore, enjoy teaching Yoga classes for new students. The energy and interest, within new students, is like a breath of fresh air. It will keep your mind young and your thoughts clear.

Check Out The Total-Body Yoga Workout: Lower Body, Abs, and Upper Body Yoga for Beginners for $19.98

The Total-Body Yoga Workout: Lower Body, Abs, and Upper Body Yoga for Beginners Review

I bought this years ago & though they are a bit hard for those who are out of shape, I wouldn't recommend them for novices, but they are still beginner level in terms of physical/flexibility level.
The lower body is with Susanne Season. The music is light, the scene is her near the edge of a cliff with gorgeous mountain range behind her. She is alone & there is no modifications.
There is no sun salutations, but a lot of downward dog, standing fwd bends, chair & mountain. Add is lunges, hand/knee with arm/leg balance, donward dog with 1 leg lifted, plank, upward dog, warrior 1 2 & 3, triangle, side angle, half moon, dancer's pose, bridge, reclined single leg stretch, boat, sitting fwd bend, wide legged fwd bend, reclined cobblers, etc.
If you own several yoga dvds, the pace is not power fast, she holds it about 2 full breaths. I loved the workout though, there are many poses were if you do too many sun salutations, you never have time for many other poses.

You can see a preview at gaiam com any media product you see yoga lower body w/susanne in a mountain range, yoga abs with rodney yee in a desert or upperbody yoga with rodney in a valley.

The Total-Body Yoga Workout: Lower Body, Abs, and Upper Body Yoga for Beginners Overview

Living Yoga succeeds in re-creating its superb yoga programs for DVD with the three-in-one workout The Total-Body Yoga Workout, which combines the individual body part programs on one disc.

The first workout, Lower Body Yoga for Beginners, led by Suzanne Deason, is a fun, short routine that will help you to invigorate and stretch the lower body in a series of flowing postures, working to stretch, tone, and challenge one's muscles and balance. In the second segment, Rodney Yee leads Abs Yoga for Beginners, which is designed to firm and strengthen your abs while providing a soothing respite from your hectic lifestyle. The poses are, for the most part, simple to follow, although the beginner may need to ease into some of the positions. Finally, Yee leads us through Upper Body Yoga for Beginners, a workout that will stretch, strengthen, and energize the upper body. Yee flows through poses designed to develop an open, supported chest, which in turn promotes healthy circulation, breathing, digestion, and posture. For all of these programs, a firm blanket to sit upon is needed.

The extra features on this disc are the same as those on The All-Day Yoga Workout. Once again, the DVD format is ideal for a workout program--the chapter search makes it easy to skip the introduction and jump right into the body work. Or if you're short on time and just need to relax, you can move directly to the meditations. An extra feature, "Learning the Basics," has pictures of every pose with written instructions on how to do them, which is just the thing for beginners who feel befuddled when told to do a cow-face pose or gate pose. A section on props explains how to use straps, bricks, and mats in order to modify more difficult poses for less limber bodies. Finally, the interviews with Suzanne Deason, Patricia Walden, and Rodney Yee round out the DVD, making for a full program. This is the ultimate introduction to yoga; it's a workout regimen that's easy to incorporate into your daily life and fun enough to convince you to stick with it. --Jenny Brown

Great variety! - A. Ortiz - San Diego, CA United States
I've had this DVD for a long time, and I use it periodically when I need a good stretch, and can't go to the gym. I wouldn't call this a beginner workout, but its not difficult and easy to follow if you're familiar with the positions. I also like that's its easy to do if you don't have a lot of time with 3 different 20 minute workouts. I would recommend it!

Great workout, stress release. - Marisa C. -
I love this workout dvd! It's a perfect way to release stress and achieve a more calm state. The breathing techniques are amazing and I find myself using them throughout the day. I would definitely recommend this dvd to everyone.

I love the lower body workout!! - Kite Flyer - annapolis, MD
I am not a beginner by any means. I have been studying various forms of yoga for 10-plus years. I had no idea this was a beginners workout when I did it and would never recommend this for beginners.
It has, however, a very lovely, inspiring, effective, lower body workout that I plan to do often. Suzanne Deason is wonderful. Her exercising on the edge of a cliff is a bit terrifying to watch and I don't generally like yoga DVDs with "scenery" but this one works. I skip the Rodney Yee portion because he is not my favorite instructor though, of course, this is just personal preference!
