Christian Fitness - Should it Include Yoga?

Yoga is extremely popular in the fitness world, and many wonder if it has a place in Christian Fitness. Is there such a thing as "Christian yoga" or a "Christian alternative to yoga?" While many know that yoga originated in India, few realize it is part of the Hindu religion.

Those who think yoga is little more than a series of stress-relieving stretching exercises may be surprised to learn about true foundation of the multi-billion dollar yoga craze in North America.

According to Webster's New World Dictionary, yoga (coming from an east Indian Sanskrit word which means "union with god" or "to yoke") is "a mystic and ascetic Hindu discipline for achieving union with the supreme spirit through meditation, prescribed postures, controlled breathing, etc."

As a child growing up on Long Island, I became involved with yoga at the age of seven when my mother and I began watching a daily yoga exercise program on television (thinking it was "just exercise"). For the next 22 years I was heavily involved with yoga, metaphysics and the New Age movement until I became a follower of Jesus Christ in my late 20s.

George P. Alexander, Ph.D., who taught World Religions at Biola University, is a friend of our family. Born in Sri Lanka, George grew up in India, the birthplace of Hinduism and yoga. He told us that yoga postures are actually offerings to the 330 million Hindu gods.

"Many Westerners who practice yoga today are unaware that the physical positions assumed in yoga symbolize a spiritual act: worshiping one of the many Hindu gods," Dr. Alexander said. "To a Hindu, yoga is the outward physical expression of a deep spiritual belief. You cannot separate one from the other."

Since yoga is tied so strongly to Hinduism, can there be such a thing as "Christian yoga," or would that be an oxymoron (a contradiction in terms)? Many practicing Hindus as well as Christians agree that since yoga IS Hinduism, the two cannot be combined.

Are there other ways to bring flexibility training into a Christian's fitness program without doing yoga? Yes! There are plain vanilla stretching courses as well as Christian alternatives to yoga which incorporate stretching exercises with Scripture. Practitioners meditate upon Scripture or speak verses aloud which correspond with each stretching posture. For example, in PraiseMoves, a Christian alternative to yoga, "The Angel" posture is accompanied by Psalm 91:11, "For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways."

As Dr. Alexander told us, "My question for Christians who practice yoga is, 'Why would you want to better your body by aligning with a religious philosophy that contradicts the Christian faith?'" Good question.

Yoga Instructor

Lead or Self Taught Yoga Sessions? That is the Question!

Having a yoga instructor can really help to boost your yoga practice. They will demonstrate the asanas (postures) so you can really see what you need to be doing and they will help you by watching what you do and making small corrections to keep your body aligned and safe. However Yoga is a wonderful tool for stress management that you can learn on your own with the help of a DVD or book. It all depends on you and your learning style. Think first - what way have you learnt best in the past. Do you like to experience something by actually doing it and then you learn it well? Do you like to read something about the topic and that helps you learn best? Do you like to see something being done by someone else and then copying it which is where DVD's are so helpful?

We each have our own best method of learning and the way you learn Yoga will be no different. Of course it can be nice to combine some of these and, for instance, go to a class and also read up on it. Or go home and do your daily yoga practice with a dvd to guide you. Yoga instructors come in all shapes and sizes and with their own preferred style. Typically yoga instructors are young women and they love what they do so you can expect an enthusiastic, warm and lovely class. Also fairly typical in the yoga instructor field are old women or men who have had some background in dance or sports and who then turn to yoga. These instructors can be very suitable for an older person as they understand a lot about changes in the body and have a wide range of information to supplement their yoga knowledge.

The most important thing about Yoga and finding an instructor or teaching yourself through some other method is that you enjoy what you are doing. If you like being part of a class because it gives you structure and some social contact - like a little oasis of peace that is just for you every week - then that will be the right choice for you. If you like to create a sense of peace and enjoyment through practising quietly at home in your own space at any time you fancy - then that is right for you. If you do it in a way that you don't enjoy you will not carry on with the practice over a long period of time (which is when you really reap the benefits!)and your body will be stiff with resistance as you do it, which isn't nice! So think about what works for you - then make that happen. Enjoy!

How to Increase Height - Grow Taller With Yoga Exercises and Look Taller Like a Tower

If you have being wondering how to increase height and look taller after you have attained puberty, then there are only a few options. The most proven option to grow taller is the limb surgery. This surgery is expensive and not many can afford. Other inexpensive options are limited and the best that may be possible is by correcting the posture and expanding the disks in the vertebrae.

Modern day life is such that we sit in a way that a slouched back is not uncommon. This makes you look much shorter than your actual average height. And the habit of living on fast foods like burgers, pizzas and other similar items makes you put on weight. This excess weight results in compressed bones and muscles. If you want to increase height and look taller, simple lifestyle changes and yoga exercises can really help you.

Yoga provides a holistic approach to fitness. However you will have to learn yoga properly and do the exercises the correct way to get proper benefit. A piecemeal approach may not yield any results at all. Yoga will help you get fit physically and mentally. This includes things like posture correction, properly expanded bones and muscles, strengthening of bones and muscles and a flexible body. Some of these factors will help you increase height and look taller.

The most basic exercise to start with can be sukhasana or the easy posture. This exercise will help you to maintain a proper posture. And posture correction can help you to look taller by removing a slouched back. This exercise will also make the back muscles strong and allow the disks in the spine to elongate to its maximum. Disk expansion will help you to increase height by a few inches.

There are several other postures that you can practice that can help you increase height. However remember that you need to practice yoga exercises regularly for some time to see results. If you seriously want to grow taller and look taller take yoga seriously and create a daily schedule. After a few weeks you will see and feel an overall change in your physical and mental fitness level.

3 Health Benefits of Practicing Yoga

If you've never heard of yoga, you've probably been living under a rock most of your life. Although yoga originates in the East (specifically India), yoga has quickly become a fascination in the West. Most people think that yoga is a form of exercise, but yoga itself is actually a spiritual discipline with many branches, from kriya yoga to bakti yoga.

Yoga, in the Sanskrit, simply means 'to yoke'. Yoga is the Hindu religion's way of connecting with God. However, there obviously is a physical aspect to yoga, which is the most popular and prevalent version in the west. There are many benefits to incorporating physical yoga into your lifestyle, and in this article I'm going to discuss 3 of them.

Posture

Yoga is popularly known for it's crazy stretches and wacky physical positions, which people who practice it hold for minutes (or longer, if they're really adventurous), at a time. Better posture comes from increased strength and flexibility, which I'll be discussing shortly.

Because you're supporting and maintaining each pose in yoga for minutes at a time, your abdominal muscles are being utilized to keep your structure. With a stronger body, you're more likely to stand tall or sit up straight. Plus, the extra energy helps you maintain your posture.

Strength

Some postures in yoga are more strenuous than others. Certain postures are easy to maintain and require relatively little stamina to keep going. However, there are others that require an extreme amount of endurance, and practicing these daily will increase your strength ten-fold. Everyone who practices yoga regularly will attest to it's strength-building powers. People who do yoga often are usually well-toned, and enjoy the added energy and strength that yoga gives them day to day.

Flexibility

You're never too young or old to improve your flexibility. By doing asanas (the postures in physical yoga), your flexibility is increased automatically. The stretching in the muscles that you're using in yoga are secreting the lactic acid that builds up in unused muscles, and this lactic acid is known for causing stiffness, tension, fatigue, and pain. Yoga also increases the lubrication and range of motion in joints. This produces a sense of fluidity and ease throughout your yoga body.

These are just a few of the many reasons to start practicing physical yoga. There are many tapes, DVDs, CDs, books, and other products out there to help you start learning how to do yoga and start practicing it on a daily basis. Start enjoying the health benefits of yoga today.

Check Out Bend, Breathe, and Conceive: Fertility Yoga with Anna Davis, Ph.D., RYT for $15.50

Bend, Breathe, and Conceive: Fertility Yoga with Anna Davis, Ph.D., RYT Review

I have "Yoga 4 Fertility" by Brenda Strong as well as "Bend, Breathe, and Conceive" by Anna Davis. Both are good but this one is my favorite. There are lots of forward bends and downward facing dog in both videos but this one has more warrior and triangle poses and other things that add more variety. The narration is terrific, making it easy to follow and the background music is pleasant and subtle. The relaxation at the end is wonderful and you're definitely not shortchanged like in other DVDs. She takes her time and walks you through 3 different relaxation poses - 2 of which are inverted, using the wall to prop you up. Just a note that you'll need some props for this exercise: block, strap and blankets. You could probably do it without the block if you're really flexible but the other 2 are essential for the relaxation poses at the end. I feel stronger and more relaxed when I finish this DVD and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Great DVD! Relaxing. - K. Woodruff -
Great DVD, perfect for anyone who wants some simple relaxing yoga. I haven't done yoga for a few months and her poses were a bit challenging at first, but felt great! I recommend this DVD to anyone looking to relieve some stress with yoga

Disappointing-Don't waste your money - Cassy - Chicago, IL
Don't waste your money. After using this video, I was more stressed than when I began. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers when they say this video is lacking. It really is hard to define what exactly it is about this video but it did nothing for me. Maybe it is because the instructor is just going through these uninspiring motions. I think she is trying hard but comes across stiff and almost military-like. No thanks.

not for beginners - Ivan's Dad -
Not for beginners. Breathing techniques are not easy to grasp. Progression of exercises, poses is very quick. Hard to follow when your head is down, and the guide is already on to the next move. However inspires huge respect for major
pregnant ladies who make me look like a sad sack.
