Work Out With a Yoga Fitness DVD - A Great Way to Get Fit, Beat Stress, and Feel Your Best!

Relaxation - Endurance - Stress Management - Flexibility

What do all these things have in common? First, they are all things we need to work on improving in our busy American lifestyles. Getting better at these areas has long been advocated by health experts as a way to increase our quality of life, reduce the risk of injury or illness, and even to live longer!

Second, these are all benefits of working out with Yoga! Hatha yoga - the physical yoga postures or "asanas" that most of us associate with yoga exercise - is a great way to build muscle, increase the range of motion in our joints, and create an opportunity for calm, balance and relaxation in our daily schedules. Now before you get nervous that I'm going to go all "transcendental" on you, don't worry! Although yoga traditionally does include a lot of spiritual, meditative and holistic practices, you can get many of the benefits of a yoga lifestyle by just incorporating a little yoga fitness workout routine into your weekly schedule. Whether you can do 60-minutes 3x per week, or squeeze in some Sun Salutations for 15 minutes every morning - even a moderate increase in your activity level through the incorporation of yoga practices can help.

One of the biggest objections many people have about working out with yoga is over the fear that they don't have time for exercise. Working out at home with a yoga fitness DVD can be a great solution to the problem.

I know your schedule already feels jam-packed and you're worried you won't have time for yoga. As a full-time-mom (all parents are full-time in my opinion - you never stop worrying about your kids!) and a business-owner, I find that there are never enough hours in the day to do everything I want to. However, it's important to prioritize your health and make time for replenishing your body and spirit on a daily basis. Exercise is a great way to do that. When you work out at home with a yoga fitness DVD, you can squeeze in your exercise whenever you have time. Before dawn when the house is quiet, when the kids are napping or the family's watching TV downstairs, or even as a family activity that encourages everyone in the household to be active and share time together.

Another concern that many people have about yoga exercise is that it's going to be expensive. Yoga has certainly enjoyed a period of "trendiness" lately and with yoga classes sprouting up all over the country at elite gyms and studios, it's easy to see how yoga has gotten the reputation for being expensive. However, remember that yoga was developed by ascetics in some of the poorest areas of the world. You have more than they do in terms of material possessions - if they can do it, you can do. Although you don't "need" anything to practice yoga, and you can even learn it for free with some workout videos from the library or picture books that show you step-by-step what to do, I recommend that you start with two essentials: A yoga mat to enhance your comfort and safety while doing the poses, and a good instructional yoga video to lead you through a workout or two that you can follow and enjoy over and over again.

For the price of a class or two at the local yoga studio, you can get everything you need to workout at home.

I encourage you to look into yoga exercise as a total body workout, or a supplement to your existing exercise routine.

Yoga For Guys - Fitness, Weight Loss and More

In the East where yoga originated centuries ago, the practice of Yoga is dominated by men. It has been this way from the start. In the west, and particularly in the United States, yoga has gained in popularity mostly among women over the past few decades. I think guys have really missed the boat here.

Even physically active men, those who participate regularly in sports, or maintain serious fitness regimes can benefit from practicing yoga. Although the stereotypical male yogi is thought to be scrawny and weak, I can tell you that these guys are anything but. By contrast, I've seen more than my share of apparently fit gym rats collapse onto the mat in a pool of sweat, unable to complete their first class.

For those who are relatively sedentary and wish to improve their physical conditioning, yoga is a great place to start, especially for we older guys. It is low impact and you can truly progress at your own pace. When practiced with emphasis on correct form and breathing, yoga provides a significantly challenging workout.

As you progress, the almost endless series of poses become more difficult and body weight resistance combined with the effective stretching involved combine to improve the body's overall condition. Yoga can be practiced by beginners using modified poses, basically "cheats" where you don't move entirely into the pose or use props to assist.

The body and mind develop quite quickly to the point where modifications are no longer necessary. Steady improvement on the basic poses lead to more difficult advanced movements. What seems impossible at first is realized within a few short months.

Many guys find Yoga to be a godsend for addressing chronic lower back problems and I count myself among them. My previously frequent lower back outages are a distant memory since beginning my own yoga practice. If fact, it was the desperation of those back problems that lead me to investigate yoga in the first place.

Yoga postures gently strengthen back and abdominal muscles like few other exercise forms can do. These "core" muscles are essential components of the spinal muscular network, which helps maintain proper posture and overall body alignment. Greater strength and flexibility in this area are known to greatly reduce lower back pain. Yoga also assists by helping to decompress the spine.

Another beneficial aspect lies in yoga's ability to reduce stress and improve immune functions. Many experts believe it may lower the chances of heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue, diabetes, asthma and obesity. It is even said to fend off aging altogether.

At the risk of sounding esoteric and metaphysical, there is more to yoga than the physical movements. Proper breathing into the yoga posture, while maintaining form helps to open that area of the body. Exhaling while moving deeper into the pose expels stress and toxins.

While that may sound new-agey, it is actually very old-agey. The effect is very noticeable once you do it and the outcome is a new level of body awareness and mental function that is almost indescribable in words.

Regular yoga practice will provide improvements in flexibility and muscle joint mobility; increased muscle size, strength and tone, improved posture, increases stamina and balance. Yoga is also said to stimulate improvements in the endocrine system, digestion and circulation while encouraging weight loss.

So why not give yoga a try. That is, if you think you're man enough.

Christian Fitness - Should it Include Yoga?

Yoga is extremely popular in the fitness world, and many wonder if it has a place in Christian Fitness. Is there such a thing as "Christian yoga" or a "Christian alternative to yoga?" While many know that yoga originated in India, few realize it is part of the Hindu religion.

Those who think yoga is little more than a series of stress-relieving stretching exercises may be surprised to learn about true foundation of the multi-billion dollar yoga craze in North America.

According to Webster's New World Dictionary, yoga (coming from an east Indian Sanskrit word which means "union with god" or "to yoke") is "a mystic and ascetic Hindu discipline for achieving union with the supreme spirit through meditation, prescribed postures, controlled breathing, etc."

As a child growing up on Long Island, I became involved with yoga at the age of seven when my mother and I began watching a daily yoga exercise program on television (thinking it was "just exercise"). For the next 22 years I was heavily involved with yoga, metaphysics and the New Age movement until I became a follower of Jesus Christ in my late 20s.

George P. Alexander, Ph.D., who taught World Religions at Biola University, is a friend of our family. Born in Sri Lanka, George grew up in India, the birthplace of Hinduism and yoga. He told us that yoga postures are actually offerings to the 330 million Hindu gods.

"Many Westerners who practice yoga today are unaware that the physical positions assumed in yoga symbolize a spiritual act: worshiping one of the many Hindu gods," Dr. Alexander said. "To a Hindu, yoga is the outward physical expression of a deep spiritual belief. You cannot separate one from the other."

Since yoga is tied so strongly to Hinduism, can there be such a thing as "Christian yoga," or would that be an oxymoron (a contradiction in terms)? Many practicing Hindus as well as Christians agree that since yoga IS Hinduism, the two cannot be combined.

Are there other ways to bring flexibility training into a Christian's fitness program without doing yoga? Yes! There are plain vanilla stretching courses as well as Christian alternatives to yoga which incorporate stretching exercises with Scripture. Practitioners meditate upon Scripture or speak verses aloud which correspond with each stretching posture. For example, in PraiseMoves, a Christian alternative to yoga, "The Angel" posture is accompanied by Psalm 91:11, "For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways."

As Dr. Alexander told us, "My question for Christians who practice yoga is, 'Why would you want to better your body by aligning with a religious philosophy that contradicts the Christian faith?'" Good question.
