Yoga Journal's Yoga for Strength and Energy Review

...and I only got through the first session!

I've been practicing yoga for about 2 months now and definitely consider myself a beginner. However, I was looking for something to increase my strength through yoga. I preveiwed the DVD first and then performed session 1 this morning. *WOW*

I really like the way Yee holds the poses in session 1 for a long time. I couldn't make it through the entire 2 minutes of downward dog, but this gives me something to practice toward achievement. I've actually done a shoulderstand in yoga class, but only once and I don't think I performed it correctly via this DVD. I would think if one has a bad back or a strain, one should skip this portion of the DVD until one works with a yoga practitioner that can assist with proper posing. Incidentally, the Downward Dog pose where you bend your elbows is TOUGH! While these are only performed 3 times, I only made it twice - and barely at that! One of the last poses of session 1 is where we take our leg (with or without a strap, depending on your flexiblity) and move your leg on the outside of the body and then across. A bit challenging, but what a great stretch. I really felt my hips open up.

Rodney Yee is quickly becoming one of my favorite yoga masters. I've viewed several of his tapes and have enjoyed them all. His voice is clear and soothing; his instruction is great and he is in great shape.

If you're a beginner who has the courage to try a more stenous yoga practice, then I recommend this DVD. It's a nice alternative to building flexibility and meditation. I practiced this DVD this morning and I feel as though I can take on anything work has to throw at me. It also gives me a goal - to finish both sessions at one shot! It will take time, but I'll get my money's worth out of this DVD!

Yoga Journal's Yoga for Strength and Energy Overview

This Yoga Journal DVD contains two workout programs: "Yoga Practice for Strength" and "Yoga Practice for Energy."

In "Yoga Practice for Strength," teacher Rodney Yee begins the lesson with variations of sun salutations and poses such as the dog, triangle, and others. In the second, more intense sequence, Yee leads the bridge, shoulder stand, warrior, and balancing poses, his narration soothing and his technique inspiring. Very difficult poses, such as the crane pose and pendulum pose, comprise the end of the set. This session is not recommended for those new to yoga because it is quite strenuous; students should first be familiar with the vinyasas to ensure that the poses are reached and held correctly.

"Yoga Practice for Energy" is a different kind of workout. Filmed at the beach on Maui, the sessions Awakening, Centering, Creativity, Reflection, and Surrender offer movements that follow the cycle of the sun through the course of a day. Viewers are encouraged to first try the entire tape several times, and then use the sessions that correspond to their needs at any particular time. For example, if you've just trudged in the door from a hectic day, you may want to use the Reflection session, in which "a cooling, tranquil series of forward bends and hip openers let all activities of the day seep in like watercolors setting into paper." Almost no narrative accompanies the five practice sessions, and if you are a beginner you may feel lost at first viewing. Have no fear: the DVD contains a wonderful appendix to which you can refer for tips on technique and variations on poses. --Jhana Bach

Good practice, but slow... - Rachele B. Ford - Orange County, CA
I really like Rodney Yee as a video instructor, but this video was a bit slow. the movements were pretty basic and I would recommend it for beginners but not imtermediate yogis!

AWESOME RODNEY YEE! - Dee A. Marfe - Selkirk, NY United States
Yoga Journal's Yoga for Strength and Energy

Love this DVD! Gets me moving, energized and centered for my day. Would not want to be without it. I would recomend Gaiam's DVD to everybody but to have a Rodney Yee DVD makes it all the more special. Go and get Centered, you will find that once you try these DVD from Gaiam with Rodney, you'll never want to go a day without.

Not for advanced yogis, but not for beginners either - Alison Aves - San Francisco, CA, USA
It's really strange -- the poses and sequences, and the pace at which Yee does them, seem to suggest that this is for someone who's done little or no yoga before. His pacing is really uneven -- he sometimes says "inhale, exhale" very abruptly before changing poses, but then when he's moving from standing forward bend up to mountain pose, it takes about 15 bizarrely long seconds. He doesn't talk about pacing yourself with your breath at all. I have done a lot of yoga, so I generally know where my hips are supposed to be, that my shoulders should stay down when reaching overhead, etc., but he doesn't talk you through those things at all, so beginners would probably be tottering all over the place. And he uses strange terms for things -- what I've always heard called "extended side triangle pose" he calls "side stretch pose." Very unsatisfying DVD -- not surprised they stopped producing it.

Still a Favorite! - Arlene D. - Portland, ME
I came on here looking for the DVD version and could not find it. I have had this tape for years and use the Energy section for a flexibility workout. I love the way the sequence flows. Watching Rodney and the women is like watching a beautiful dance and it is soothing as a meditation. It makes me feel like a beautiful dancer as well! It always leaves me balanced and uplifted and blissed.
I hope they release this on DVD soon. My tape is getting worn.

Facial Exercises on DVD - Understand How You Exercise Your Face

When it comes to your face, it's important to understand that you wear it every day, and while exercise and nutrition has a lot to do with how you look, exercising your face does as well. There are a variety of facial exercise DVD, CDs, and even the old-fashioned VCRs are still available so that you can understand how you exercise your face to look younger, healthier, and more expressive.

If you're taking good care of your body, you can understand how resistance, repetitions, yoga, and relaxing exercise can make your body look more toned and healthful resulting in a more youthful looking body. This can be said for your facial muscles, many times, our frowns, smiles, and worry lines are constantly under stress. This stress soon etches the muscles into looking like this whether we're feeling that way or not.

Most people will agree, age does show on the face sometimes faster than on the rest of the body, this is because of repetitive exercises. In other words, constant smiles and frowns, results in certain muscles being a bit larger or more overbearing than others. Facial exercise DVDs can show you how you can exercise and relax your face to get rid of these bulging muscles. Also, please remember, you're not after a bodybuilder face, you can do your facial exercises to the point where you might look a bit like a bodybuilder in the face. Be sure to read the directions on the DVD or VCR, and then carefully re-sculpt your face to look smoother, younger, and more toned.

The best part about looking for noninvasive techniques to look younger is the fact that you're not going through surgery, and it cost a lot less. But just like any other workout program, facial exercise results are going to be limited to your workout routine. Basically, doing a few exercises every day is going to be healthy for you no matter whether you're exercising your face or another part of your body, but in order to sculpt your face, you're going to have to be religious about the facial exercises.

Can Yoga Help to Overcome Pregnancy Stress?

Stress and anxieties are common factors that are very closely related to pregnancy. During pregnancy, lots of changes take place within the body due to the fluctuating hormonal levels. Added with excitement, fear and sometimes unwanted situations in personal life the stress levels are difficult to control, and too much of stress affects adversely the baby in the womb sometimes resulting in disasters. As the completion of the pregnancy nears, stress and worries will be following in series unless it is tackled efficiently from the beginning.

Yoga can do wonders!

Stress relieving drugs though are available in market, still gynecologists and obstetricians strictly prohibit the use of such drugs as these can have serious side effects leading to abnormal development of the fetus. Believe it or not researches and statistics have showed that yoga is the best medicine to relieve stress during pregnancy. But one should seriously carry on the yoga to get proven results till the baby is delivered. Basically four steps are followed in yoga -

1. Some mild stretching exercises are adopted for the smooth functioning of the reproductive organs and pelvic areas to ensure almost painless and smooth delivery without any complications.

2. Deep breathing exercises (Pranayama) increases the oxygen level in the blood improving the blood circulation and also providing energy and relaxing the mind, which helps in the better development of the baby in the womb.

3. Meditation helps in focusing the mind, helps the nerves to function in a coordinated manner releasing all tensions, stress. It soothes the nerves and prevents the production of harmful toxins. Meditation helps in maintaining the normal pulse rate. It helps to control emotions, develops self awareness and the bond with the baby in the womb. It even eases out the labor pains.

4. Relaxation is very essential throughout the pregnancy period. Pregnancy itself it very stressful and strenuous especially in the advanced stage. So few hours of relaxing mentally and physically, totally switching off from worries and anxieties helps one to get prepared to deliver the baby.

Yoga does not require too many procedures or tough techniques; neither extra effort nor investment is necessary. One just needs to fix a schedule time and a private secured place to carry on with the exercises. Obviously one must be cautious enough not to strain herself during pregnancy as it may result in unwanted complications. It is advisable to seek professional guidance in carrying out these exercises. One can join prenatal class to get the best advice from the experts and can also interact with other would be mothers.

Regular yoga and exercises can add glow and beauty in pregnancy too! So no use in worrying in pregnancy but it is the time to plan for a new nursery for the new member.

Pregnancy Yoga For Bad Girls Becoming Good Mothers

When your tests confirm, yes, you are pregnant, do not pass "Go" or collect $200. Abandon your bad girl ways, keeping the find memories. Immediately go directly to your favorite purveyor of all things DVD, investing promptly and eagerly in a pregnancy yoga DVD.

Make regular daily practice with your pregnancy yoga DVD your top priority-right up there with paying the mortgage and eating your fruits and vegetables.

Over the long term, practice with a pregnancy exercise DVD prepares your body and mind for labor and delivery. More importantly, your regular yoga practice develops your psyche for motherhood. Your daily exercise practice will help you quit smoking. Your daily practice with your prenatal yoga DVD also will introduce you to the intoxicating bliss of your own endorphins. While you practice, you meditate, clearing your mind of all the day-to-day nonsense and, literally, going to your happy place. Finding a Yoga DVD Review Online

The last number of years has seen numerous yoga DVDs originating from every corner of the world. Each presenter uses a different approach in teaching and the video presentation varies greatly amongst the different offerings. Because of this proliferation many wanting to do yoga at home on DVD seek out a yoga DVD review that can be used as a helpful time saver for picking out the best yoga DVDs.

The trainings of each of these in your living room presenters is based on the experiences of the instructor and those they have learnt from as well as the person who made the DVD. Different yoga schools use different styles; most at least, in part, try to adhere to the original designed systems and applications of the discipline but it is not always the case. Yoga done right and with sincerity on the part of the practitioner should leads to the ultimate liberation of the spirit and unique understanding of Divine Unity. That is a big challenge especially when many just want to get in a little better physical shape.

Most of the yoga DVDs produced struggle to make a mark for them selves because of the huge competition faced in the market place today. That is both a good and bad thing. Some offerings emphasize stress reduction and the body positions that aid in the calming of the mind. Some put more an emphasis on yoga darshan and yoga philosophy as valid aspects of the Indian metaphysics to be worked into the presentation.

Yoga goes beyond just body poses, it is the result of human wisdom and its insight on topics like psychology, physiology, ethics and spirituality mixed together. Hence the need for a yoga DVD review which can guide a beginner on which ones are better for just getting in shape or which ones have a sound and grounded philosophical offering.

In order to learn yoga the right way, one should be careful enough to choose a DVD which offers quality and insightful training. Most offerings provide the basics but there is a real difference in the presentations. Some introduce the viewer to the basics of body postures and gradually help them to move towards the advanced concepts and postures. Some also include spiritual tips and life philosophies in their presentation to ensure that the viewers have a more balanced knowledge of the discipline, be it metaphysical or practical body knowledge. This merger also makes sure that if interested, the trainees can themselves move forward on the path beyond just body positions and exercise.

The large world wide offering now available ensures that any one can find something to match their skill level. Most looking for a yoga DVD review own less then 3 DVDs hence they are seeking the guidance and assessment of those who know how to look at and compile the reviews and make recommendations. If the right choice of offerings is made by the purchaser then they are much more likely to have a sustained interest in the practices and will reap a greater benefit.

It is very important if one is just starting to not get something advanced beyond the current skill level. A good yoga DVD review site can help you easily find what best suits your physical abilities, needs personality and spiritual aspirations.

Getting the Best Yoga DVDs

There are two ways for you to get Yoga DVDs - you could buy them from your local CD and DVD shop or you could order them online. For several reasons, the latter option has an edge. First of all, any store will have a limited collection, but on the Internet, you could have access to any Yoga DVD that was ever made on this planet. Secondly, when you are on the Internet, you could check out several Yoga workout DVD review articles and stuff like that. That really helps you to make a better decision on what to buy. In the store, you only have the salesperson's word to go by.

That should actually be the first step in your little adventure of purchasing a good Yoga DVD. Do a Google search for some best home workout DVD reviews, especially for Yoga DVD reviews, and you are sure to find a lot of comments. This will give you a very good idea of what you must be looking for. If you don't know what Yoga is, you are advised to get familiar with it first. Checking out some Yoga workout videos on YouTube before ordering your DVD is recommended, because this is where you can see Yoga in action.

Yoga is an Indian exercising technique that relies on various asanas or postures. There are different asanas to target different parts of the body. So here we come to another point in our decision-making process. What part of the body are you targeting? Are you looking for a better abdomen? Or are you looking for more flexibility? Are you trying to get rid of some pain such as a lower back pain? Or are you looking for better stress management? There is a different set of Yoga asanas for each of these. Make sure you read about the Yoga DVDs you are planning to purchase. A little research on the asanas explained would help too.

There are also several beginner Yoga DVDs if you are just getting started. These contain basic workout techniques that you can easily use. Go for these if you aren't sure what you exactly need. Once you are started with it, you will have a better idea which Yoga DVD you must buy as your next investment in fitness and good health.

Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies Review

Sara Ivanhoe's nurturing teaching style makes her workouts perfect for beginners, but even if you are intermediate, she still knows how to present challenging postures in a way that makes you want to try them. This workout begins with a series of stretches to warm up the upper body, but you may want to walk for 20-30 minutes or do some aerobics to warm up the muscles. I found that without the walking or biking, I was not as flexible.

"The Daily Dozen" exercises are a little more challenging than the first DVD and I was actually surprised at two of the exercises because they almost seemed advanced. It was more the length of time you are required to hold the posture that seems to make them go beyond intermediate. Upward Dog is surprisingly challenging when held for six breaths. Normally I've tried this in a vinyasa style workout with flowing postures. When you take each posture and focus your attention for six breaths, this becomes a test of patience and endurance. The postures include:

Chair
Warrior
Triangle
Wide Leg Standing Forward Bend
Low Lunge Twist
Upward Facing Dog
Dolphin
Cow - I had never seen this exercise before! Total challenge!
Wide Leg Seated Forward Bend
Reclined Butterfly
Supine Twist
Final Relaxation

I really loved "Dolphin" which is like Downward dog with your arms bent and your head almost on the floor. It tests your upper body strength and balance, but feels great once you are done with the breathing exercises. Each posture presents a physical and psychological challenge which makes them even more fun.

"Cow" felt very much like an advanced exercise, mostly because of the flexibility required to even get into the posture. I literally sat there laughing when I realized there was no way my legs would "pretzel" the way the exercise required. So, you may just want to adapt that one for beginner/intermediate and it still seems to have the desired effect. Beginners will find some of the exercises to be more intermediate, and intermediate practitioners may find this workout great for developing patience.

For some reason, which I can't explain, Sara Ivanhoe's workouts leave me feeling more centered, balanced and generally happy and peaceful. It is as if the world spins a little more smoothly after the workout. A meditation session is also offered and Sara Ivanhoe teaches you a new mudra. I can also highly recommend her Candlelight Yoga workout and all of her 20-minute Makeovers.

Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies Overview

beyond basic yoga for dummies is the next step for anyone who enjoyed basic yoga for dummies & is ready to enhance their practice with more postures that pick up the pace. Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 09/24/2002 Starring: Sara Ivanhoe Run time: 73 minutes

Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies Specifications

Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies presents 12 yoga poses that skilled instructor Sara Ivanhoe calls the "daily dozen." Ivanhoe is calm, clear, warm, and patient, demonstrating each pose as the screen flashes easier and more challenging modifications. The too-frequent voiceover "tips," "mythbusters," and "warnings"--announced by sound effects--are louder than Ivanhoe's voice and become disconcerting interruptions. Since they also appear in print on the screen, the jarring voice is unnecessary. Ivanhoe herself could give any tips needed for safety and effectiveness. Ivanhoe's careful, detailed instructions for each pose keep the progression slow, and an experienced yoga practitioner could get bored. However, a beginning exerciser who has mastered a basic workout will find this program a helpful next step before going to an intermediate level. The 70-minute DVD edition also includes a 15-minute guided meditation and the option to eliminate the music--you still hear instructor cueing and voiceover tips, but you can play your own music. --Joan Price

This is a great yoga workout for advanced beginners and for intermediates. Sara Ivanhoe gives clear directions and makes the workout fun even with repeated viewings.

Great for beginners.... VERY BASIC - P. Lloyd -
This is a good DVD if you have NEVER EVER done Yoga before. It is very basic but informative. If you have basic knowledge of yoga, I would go for the intermediated dvd. But, like I said, if you have no knowledge whatsoever, this is a great dvd.

I'm a beginner but way past this.. - Tara Gosse - Murfreesboro, TN United States
I love Sara Ivanhoe and own some and have rented some of her other dvd's. I was real excited to get this dvd and learn some new great poses. I have just started doing Yoga and I already knew 11 of the 12 poses. I can not believe that I already knew them because they are such simple ones and this is "beyond basic". It is very clear and it is nice that is shows you what you could be doing wrong but I assumed I would learn the new poses in a flowing sequence. You just learn them and then hold them for 6 breaths and it's over. It is very easy to do and you could probably skip the first one. Her Crunch dvd's and 20 min workouts are better. I love the 20 min workouts.

Work Out With a Yoga Fitness DVD - A Great Way to Get Fit, Beat Stress, and Feel Your Best!

Relaxation - Endurance - Stress Management - Flexibility

What do all these things have in common? First, they are all things we need to work on improving in our busy American lifestyles. Getting better at these areas has long been advocated by health experts as a way to increase our quality of life, reduce the risk of injury or illness, and even to live longer!

Second, these are all benefits of working out with Yoga! Hatha yoga - the physical yoga postures or "asanas" that most of us associate with yoga exercise - is a great way to build muscle, increase the range of motion in our joints, and create an opportunity for calm, balance and relaxation in our daily schedules. Now before you get nervous that I'm going to go all "transcendental" on you, don't worry! Although yoga traditionally does include a lot of spiritual, meditative and holistic practices, you can get many of the benefits of a yoga lifestyle by just incorporating a little yoga fitness workout routine into your weekly schedule. Whether you can do 60-minutes 3x per week, or squeeze in some Sun Salutations for 15 minutes every morning - even a moderate increase in your activity level through the incorporation of yoga practices can help.

One of the biggest objections many people have about working out with yoga is over the fear that they don't have time for exercise. Working out at home with a yoga fitness DVD can be a great solution to the problem.

I know your schedule already feels jam-packed and you're worried you won't have time for yoga. As a full-time-mom (all parents are full-time in my opinion - you never stop worrying about your kids!) and a business-owner, I find that there are never enough hours in the day to do everything I want to. However, it's important to prioritize your health and make time for replenishing your body and spirit on a daily basis. Exercise is a great way to do that. When you work out at home with a yoga fitness DVD, you can squeeze in your exercise whenever you have time. Before dawn when the house is quiet, when the kids are napping or the family's watching TV downstairs, or even as a family activity that encourages everyone in the household to be active and share time together.

Another concern that many people have about yoga exercise is that it's going to be expensive. Yoga has certainly enjoyed a period of "trendiness" lately and with yoga classes sprouting up all over the country at elite gyms and studios, it's easy to see how yoga has gotten the reputation for being expensive. However, remember that yoga was developed by ascetics in some of the poorest areas of the world. You have more than they do in terms of material possessions - if they can do it, you can do. Although you don't "need" anything to practice yoga, and you can even learn it for free with some workout videos from the library or picture books that show you step-by-step what to do, I recommend that you start with two essentials: A yoga mat to enhance your comfort and safety while doing the poses, and a good instructional yoga video to lead you through a workout or two that you can follow and enjoy over and over again.

For the price of a class or two at the local yoga studio, you can get everything you need to workout at home.

I encourage you to look into yoga exercise as a total body workout, or a supplement to your existing exercise routine.

Yoga DVDs

Yoga DVD's are great tools for helping you do your yoga practice at home or for getting familiar with yoga before going to a class. However sometimes it is hard to make a DVD of a yoga practice because the time people like to be in postures differs and the pace that a yoga instructor is using can be too slow or too fast for you.

This can be particularly true for Yoga approaches like Yin Yoga. In this style of yoga the idea is to stay in a posture that is specifically designed to work with the joints and connective tissue. As we get older the connective tissue in our bodies gets tighter and 'drier'; aching and cracking as we move. Therefore the length of time we may want to be in a posture will vary hugely depending on which joints we are working with, how we feel that day and what your body history is in that part of our body.

A way round this for people who want to do this form of Yoga is to have a series of pictures of the postures you want to use in front of you. It is best if a Yin Yoga teacher helps you work out the best routine but you can do it yourself if you are sensible and pay close attention to your body as you try them out. It is NEVER OK to have pain! You will then need a timer and with the picture in front of you for your first posture you can press the starter button on the timer and wait in position as the time passes.

Aim for only one or two minutes at first. They will seem like forever! Once you get used to your chosen flow of postures you can then extend the time you spend in each and also relax about getting it 'right'. Just keep easing yourself until you are comfortably working with the position and then breath gently and quietly in a semi-meditative state. Your body will relax and yield as you do this and your breathing will become more profound in its impact as your body moves into a relaxed yet alert state.

You can see from what i have written above that having a DVD where the pace is dictated would not work for this kind of practice. Having said that I make one exception which is the excellent DVD on Yin Yoga by Paul Grilley. This is a good one to watch to really understand the practice in some depth however once you have done this I do think it is best to use yourself and your body as your guides and pace your practice according to your needs. Enjoy your Yin Yoga. Your body will thank you for it so much!

The Totally Natural Cotton Yoga Mat

In the US and Europe, yoga has become very popular in deed for both keep fit and relaxation, and more and lots shops are selling equipment such as bags and mats. After a few weeks of attending classes and individuals will have to come to a decision about whether to buy a cotton yoga mat or use one that's being provided by the course If the decision as been made to buy one then you will find many different options that vary in features, colors and materials.

Various Designs of Mats:

You'll find the rubber yoga mats to be the cheapest and most common mats in the market place today. Most stores that sell exercise equipment will stock most of these mats in different colors and sizes, but will cost you around $15-$60. Even though the majority are manufactured from synthetic rubber materials, you'll see some mats that are more environmentally friendly because they are made from recycled rubber.

For those individuals who would like to spend more on a mat, they will find cotton ones available. To stop any slippage, a few of the mats will have to have a thin rubber mat put underneath them. Some of the mats have a non-slipping material within the design, so all you will require is the cotton yoga mat, which has a natural cotton fiber filling with an outer cover also manufactured from cotton. These bags can be cleaned very easily, just put them in a washer machine to get rid of all the bacteria have sweat. You can expect to pay around eight dollars or more for a mat that is made from completely natural cotton fibers. You can also purchase massage equipment and cotton yoga mat kits as an inclusive package, however, these will cost over $200.00, a large investment indeed.

The reason for getting a good quality mat, regardless of whether it is one of the rubber yoga mats or a cotton yoga mat is to assist an individual in keeping their feet and hands in place when doing poses. They also make a cushion between a persons body and the floor while creating poses, which definitely makes it much more comfortable. Most of the mats are less than half an inch thick, the reason being it would be difficult to do balancing poses on anything thicker.

I have been reviewing parts of it every morning for 45 minutes since I bought the DVDs a month ago. Two recalcitrant problem areas that have responded well to this therapy have been the proximal hamstring/ischial tuberosity area & the posterior margin of the greater trochanter area. Thanks for reading this review.

Yoga For Guys - Fitness, Weight Loss and More

In the East where yoga originated centuries ago, the practice of Yoga is dominated by men. It has been this way from the start. In the west, and particularly in the United States, yoga has gained in popularity mostly among women over the past few decades. I think guys have really missed the boat here.

Even physically active men, those who participate regularly in sports, or maintain serious fitness regimes can benefit from practicing yoga. Although the stereotypical male yogi is thought to be scrawny and weak, I can tell you that these guys are anything but. By contrast, I've seen more than my share of apparently fit gym rats collapse onto the mat in a pool of sweat, unable to complete their first class.

For those who are relatively sedentary and wish to improve their physical conditioning, yoga is a great place to start, especially for we older guys. It is low impact and you can truly progress at your own pace. When practiced with emphasis on correct form and breathing, yoga provides a significantly challenging workout.

As you progress, the almost endless series of poses become more difficult and body weight resistance combined with the effective stretching involved combine to improve the body's overall condition. Yoga can be practiced by beginners using modified poses, basically "cheats" where you don't move entirely into the pose or use props to assist.

The body and mind develop quite quickly to the point where modifications are no longer necessary. Steady improvement on the basic poses lead to more difficult advanced movements. What seems impossible at first is realized within a few short months.

Many guys find Yoga to be a godsend for addressing chronic lower back problems and I count myself among them. My previously frequent lower back outages are a distant memory since beginning my own yoga practice. If fact, it was the desperation of those back problems that lead me to investigate yoga in the first place.

Yoga postures gently strengthen back and abdominal muscles like few other exercise forms can do. These "core" muscles are essential components of the spinal muscular network, which helps maintain proper posture and overall body alignment. Greater strength and flexibility in this area are known to greatly reduce lower back pain. Yoga also assists by helping to decompress the spine.

Another beneficial aspect lies in yoga's ability to reduce stress and improve immune functions. Many experts believe it may lower the chances of heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue, diabetes, asthma and obesity. It is even said to fend off aging altogether.

At the risk of sounding esoteric and metaphysical, there is more to yoga than the physical movements. Proper breathing into the yoga posture, while maintaining form helps to open that area of the body. Exhaling while moving deeper into the pose expels stress and toxins.

While that may sound new-agey, it is actually very old-agey. The effect is very noticeable once you do it and the outcome is a new level of body awareness and mental function that is almost indescribable in words.

Regular yoga practice will provide improvements in flexibility and muscle joint mobility; increased muscle size, strength and tone, improved posture, increases stamina and balance. Yoga is also said to stimulate improvements in the endocrine system, digestion and circulation while encouraging weight loss.

So why not give yoga a try. That is, if you think you're man enough.

How to Choose the Right Yoga Class

People of all ages are realizing that yoga can be beneficial to their lives. Whether you are looking to practice yoga as a primary fitness activity, or you are looking at it to improve your performance in other sports, there is something for everyone. Yoga is a great way to lose weight, stay toned and limber, and relax your body and mind with regular meditation. It is also however, a great way for participants in other sports such as football or wrestling to become more flexible, improve their coordination and balance, and their overall performance. When you are thinking about beginning a yoga practice, there are a few things to consider.

Beginning practitioners should join a class. While you can learn from a DVD in the comfort of your own home, you will be better off learning from a qualified instructor. Getting into yoga positions can be challenging, doing them incorrectly can actually be dangerous. To minimize your risk of injury, you should learn how to properly move into positions and hold them. There are classes for all levels of practitioner and for specific ailments as well. In addition to being excellent for your overall health, certain poses can assist your body in healing from some diseases or conditions. It can ameliorate symptoms for problems such as IBS, Depression, back pain, etc. Finding the right class will get you on the road to feeling better.

When you look for a class, keep a few things in mind. The first is what level you are at. People new to yoga should start with a beginner class. There are different types of yoga as well. Kripalu yoga is good for beginners and those not yet at an advanced level, where as Ashtanga yoga is better for those who have been practicing for awhile and are looking for a challenge. Classes within a school will also vary so once you find a studio you are comfortable with, try a few different classes and instructors to see where you click.

If you have decided to go the class route, there are a few places that you can go for advisement. The best obviously is if you have a friend or coworker who is involved in yoga. They may be able to share their experiences with you and suggest a studio and instructor with whom you would be happy. There are private schools that specialize on yoga, though there are also generally yoga classes at leisure centers, gyms and colleges. Look around and do some investigating to see where you would be most comfortable. The internet is a great resource, as is Yoga Magazine which generally has a section once a year or so, listing different schools throughout the country.

Yoga is such a great activity, get started today!

Simple Ways To Stop Snoring

If you have a snoring problem, most likely your sleep has not been as perfect as you might want it to be. You may find yourself not getting a whole lot out of your sleep, and you start off wrongly with a bad mood early in the morning. Then you look at your partner beside you, who then gives you a sarcastic smile - as if saying: "yeah, you snored again, honey!" - making you realize that you jeopardized and disturbed your partner's sleep all through out the night as well.

There are simple ways to stop snoring - and you can easily subscribe to these without hassle. What these require mostly is your dedication, will and commitment to stick on these ways. Simple as they seem, keeping at it at all times would pose to be a more difficult undertaking that you will ever demand upon yourself. Below is your guide to the simple ways to stop snoring:

Be healthy and active. Have an exercise program and schedule it so that you are most likely to adhere to it and not give excuses for not showing up to the gym.

Meditation Exercises. Yoga and tai chi will not only make you fit, these will teach one to relax despite how stressful the situation is.

Have enough sleep. A good night's sleep will improve your health.

Eat and Drink healthy. A good rule to follow is to take in natural foods. If these are not available, choose alternatives that are close to its natural and raw form. Most nutrients are retained if the food does not undergo artificial processing.

Quit Smoking. Smoking affects the natural lining of the tissues on your throat. It also contributes to nasal congestion.

Limit alcohol intake. Avoid alcohol intake especially when you are about to sleep. This has shown to contribute to the snoring problem.

Pamper Yourself. Go to a sauna; have a massage. It will improve your blood circulation, lowers stress levels, relaxes your muscles, and make you healthier.

Above are the simple ways to stop snoring. The tools you need are your determination to stick to your plan, and most importantly your execution of the plan. Being determined to do an act is one thing, but executing it is another. Again, these are simple ways to stop snoring, but your success depends on what you decide at each moment and what you do at each moment.

Better Sex Through Yoga 1: Beginners Review

Jacquie Noelle is probably the sexiest Yoga instructor I've ever seen. Her personality makes her workouts some of the most enjoyable yoga workouts I've tried. She is wearing a black outfit while working out. You of course, can wear anything you want to wear. Hint: "Something Sexy" like well, you can decide.

There is one scene that could be considered a short dance. It is not difficult, however it will make you feel very sexy. The bare wood floor and sheer drapes covering the window are the basics of the set. Then, you have some plants and candles, a chair, a water bottle and a towel.

Throughout this workout, the instructor teaches sensual and graceful yoga moves beyond upward or downward dog. Horizon, plank and warrior pose will all be familiar.

You will also learn some essential:

Breathing techniques
Pelvic Stretches
Inner-core strengtheners
Body-enhancement positions

What did I notice after exercising?

1. I caught myself walking in a sexy way through my kitchen. Hey, hey.
2. I felt like I had more energy.
3. I felt that my skin tingled a bit and I felt warm all over. (Probably revitalizing nerve endings and increasing blood circulation)
4. My body loved the stretching and relaxation section at the end of the workout.
5. I felt kinda sexy and the feeling lasted all night and well into the next day.

The exercises in this workout will be very familiar to anyone who has experienced yoga. This is mostly yoga, but there is a small section of modern dance. I did appreciate the attention to some of my more favorite poses although I'm still struggling with "table" pose.

Some of the Special Features Include:

1. Better Sex Through Yoga - This section explains how increased Strength, Flexibility and Control leads to sexual fitness. Jacquie explains how these exercises will help you "get into" and "hold" new and exciting positions. I think we are talking about Kama Sutra here.

2. Scene Selection:

Warm Up
Standing Poses
Sexy Yoga Dance
Floor Work
Abs and Sexual Core
Final Relaxation

3. Additional Instruction - Introduction & Yoga Poses

Yoga Poses - This is an almost "silent" section you can watch that shows a variety of poses with notes on proper form. You have to hit pause to read each one as they move through the poses rather fast. You will learn the names of the poses and this will be helpful for anyone new to yoga. This is the section to watch to understand the "sexual core" exercises.

4. Out-Takes and Bloopers - Explains some of the chemistry going on during the filming of this workout.

"Better Sex Through Yoga is an exciting workout designed to increase your body awareness all while seducing you into a new level of sexual fitness."

I also tried the second Intermediate workout and third advanced workout and they are slightly more challenging than the first workout. I love them all!

I'll Give it the Benefit of The Doubt & Give it a 2 - H. Foster -
I'm an American living in the UK, so to send this back would cost almost as much as it did to buy it. I have not even done this DVD because the sound quality is so poor that unless my TV is up full blast I can't make out what she is saying. If I have it on loud enough to understand her, the music is so loud it's overpowering. I'm giving it a 2 for concept and because since I haven't actually done the exercizes, I will assume some good can come from them. Not recommended.

Big Disappointment - Mamzelle Bee - Michigan, USA
I saw this DVD in a store, and bought it almost immediately. The minute I popped it in the player, I was disappointed.

It's a very boring DVD. Now, I'm no yoga slouch, but some of the positions were a little difficult - but not so much difficult as tedious. The sound quality was awful - not just difficult to hear, but it fluctuated depending on where she was facing. And, to be honest, I can't even remember if there's music.

I was hoping to unlock bedroomy fun, and was left boredly hitting the fast forward button. If you want to feel sexy, I suggest getting another, slightly more active DVD - like Carmen Elektra's strip tease aerobics. A totally different ball field, but guaranteed to put a little spice in your life.

Awful - emily dickinson -
I don't know why this yoga DVD got such good ratings. The sound quality was so awful, i couldn't hear what she was saying. It seemed like it was filmed in her living room without proper sound equipment or something. Also, definitely not for new yoga users. While Volume 1 is for "beginners", her positioning went excessively fast throughout the workout. It shouldn't be noted as for "beginners" if it's not.

Christian Fitness - Should it Include Yoga?

Yoga is extremely popular in the fitness world, and many wonder if it has a place in Christian Fitness. Is there such a thing as "Christian yoga" or a "Christian alternative to yoga?" While many know that yoga originated in India, few realize it is part of the Hindu religion.

Those who think yoga is little more than a series of stress-relieving stretching exercises may be surprised to learn about true foundation of the multi-billion dollar yoga craze in North America.

According to Webster's New World Dictionary, yoga (coming from an east Indian Sanskrit word which means "union with god" or "to yoke") is "a mystic and ascetic Hindu discipline for achieving union with the supreme spirit through meditation, prescribed postures, controlled breathing, etc."

As a child growing up on Long Island, I became involved with yoga at the age of seven when my mother and I began watching a daily yoga exercise program on television (thinking it was "just exercise"). For the next 22 years I was heavily involved with yoga, metaphysics and the New Age movement until I became a follower of Jesus Christ in my late 20s.

George P. Alexander, Ph.D., who taught World Religions at Biola University, is a friend of our family. Born in Sri Lanka, George grew up in India, the birthplace of Hinduism and yoga. He told us that yoga postures are actually offerings to the 330 million Hindu gods.

"Many Westerners who practice yoga today are unaware that the physical positions assumed in yoga symbolize a spiritual act: worshiping one of the many Hindu gods," Dr. Alexander said. "To a Hindu, yoga is the outward physical expression of a deep spiritual belief. You cannot separate one from the other."

Since yoga is tied so strongly to Hinduism, can there be such a thing as "Christian yoga," or would that be an oxymoron (a contradiction in terms)? Many practicing Hindus as well as Christians agree that since yoga IS Hinduism, the two cannot be combined.

Are there other ways to bring flexibility training into a Christian's fitness program without doing yoga? Yes! There are plain vanilla stretching courses as well as Christian alternatives to yoga which incorporate stretching exercises with Scripture. Practitioners meditate upon Scripture or speak verses aloud which correspond with each stretching posture. For example, in PraiseMoves, a Christian alternative to yoga, "The Angel" posture is accompanied by Psalm 91:11, "For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways."

As Dr. Alexander told us, "My question for Christians who practice yoga is, 'Why would you want to better your body by aligning with a religious philosophy that contradicts the Christian faith?'" Good question.

Yoga Instructor

Lead or Self Taught Yoga Sessions? That is the Question!

Having a yoga instructor can really help to boost your yoga practice. They will demonstrate the asanas (postures) so you can really see what you need to be doing and they will help you by watching what you do and making small corrections to keep your body aligned and safe. However Yoga is a wonderful tool for stress management that you can learn on your own with the help of a DVD or book. It all depends on you and your learning style. Think first - what way have you learnt best in the past. Do you like to experience something by actually doing it and then you learn it well? Do you like to read something about the topic and that helps you learn best? Do you like to see something being done by someone else and then copying it which is where DVD's are so helpful?

We each have our own best method of learning and the way you learn Yoga will be no different. Of course it can be nice to combine some of these and, for instance, go to a class and also read up on it. Or go home and do your daily yoga practice with a dvd to guide you. Yoga instructors come in all shapes and sizes and with their own preferred style. Typically yoga instructors are young women and they love what they do so you can expect an enthusiastic, warm and lovely class. Also fairly typical in the yoga instructor field are old women or men who have had some background in dance or sports and who then turn to yoga. These instructors can be very suitable for an older person as they understand a lot about changes in the body and have a wide range of information to supplement their yoga knowledge.

The most important thing about Yoga and finding an instructor or teaching yourself through some other method is that you enjoy what you are doing. If you like being part of a class because it gives you structure and some social contact - like a little oasis of peace that is just for you every week - then that will be the right choice for you. If you like to create a sense of peace and enjoyment through practising quietly at home in your own space at any time you fancy - then that is right for you. If you do it in a way that you don't enjoy you will not carry on with the practice over a long period of time (which is when you really reap the benefits!)and your body will be stiff with resistance as you do it, which isn't nice! So think about what works for you - then make that happen. Enjoy!

How to Increase Height - Grow Taller With Yoga Exercises and Look Taller Like a Tower

If you have being wondering how to increase height and look taller after you have attained puberty, then there are only a few options. The most proven option to grow taller is the limb surgery. This surgery is expensive and not many can afford. Other inexpensive options are limited and the best that may be possible is by correcting the posture and expanding the disks in the vertebrae.

Modern day life is such that we sit in a way that a slouched back is not uncommon. This makes you look much shorter than your actual average height. And the habit of living on fast foods like burgers, pizzas and other similar items makes you put on weight. This excess weight results in compressed bones and muscles. If you want to increase height and look taller, simple lifestyle changes and yoga exercises can really help you.

Yoga provides a holistic approach to fitness. However you will have to learn yoga properly and do the exercises the correct way to get proper benefit. A piecemeal approach may not yield any results at all. Yoga will help you get fit physically and mentally. This includes things like posture correction, properly expanded bones and muscles, strengthening of bones and muscles and a flexible body. Some of these factors will help you increase height and look taller.

The most basic exercise to start with can be sukhasana or the easy posture. This exercise will help you to maintain a proper posture. And posture correction can help you to look taller by removing a slouched back. This exercise will also make the back muscles strong and allow the disks in the spine to elongate to its maximum. Disk expansion will help you to increase height by a few inches.

There are several other postures that you can practice that can help you increase height. However remember that you need to practice yoga exercises regularly for some time to see results. If you seriously want to grow taller and look taller take yoga seriously and create a daily schedule. After a few weeks you will see and feel an overall change in your physical and mental fitness level.

3 Health Benefits of Practicing Yoga

If you've never heard of yoga, you've probably been living under a rock most of your life. Although yoga originates in the East (specifically India), yoga has quickly become a fascination in the West. Most people think that yoga is a form of exercise, but yoga itself is actually a spiritual discipline with many branches, from kriya yoga to bakti yoga.

Yoga, in the Sanskrit, simply means 'to yoke'. Yoga is the Hindu religion's way of connecting with God. However, there obviously is a physical aspect to yoga, which is the most popular and prevalent version in the west. There are many benefits to incorporating physical yoga into your lifestyle, and in this article I'm going to discuss 3 of them.

Posture

Yoga is popularly known for it's crazy stretches and wacky physical positions, which people who practice it hold for minutes (or longer, if they're really adventurous), at a time. Better posture comes from increased strength and flexibility, which I'll be discussing shortly.

Because you're supporting and maintaining each pose in yoga for minutes at a time, your abdominal muscles are being utilized to keep your structure. With a stronger body, you're more likely to stand tall or sit up straight. Plus, the extra energy helps you maintain your posture.

Strength

Some postures in yoga are more strenuous than others. Certain postures are easy to maintain and require relatively little stamina to keep going. However, there are others that require an extreme amount of endurance, and practicing these daily will increase your strength ten-fold. Everyone who practices yoga regularly will attest to it's strength-building powers. People who do yoga often are usually well-toned, and enjoy the added energy and strength that yoga gives them day to day.

Flexibility

You're never too young or old to improve your flexibility. By doing asanas (the postures in physical yoga), your flexibility is increased automatically. The stretching in the muscles that you're using in yoga are secreting the lactic acid that builds up in unused muscles, and this lactic acid is known for causing stiffness, tension, fatigue, and pain. Yoga also increases the lubrication and range of motion in joints. This produces a sense of fluidity and ease throughout your yoga body.

These are just a few of the many reasons to start practicing physical yoga. There are many tapes, DVDs, CDs, books, and other products out there to help you start learning how to do yoga and start practicing it on a daily basis. Start enjoying the health benefits of yoga today.

Bend, Breathe, and Conceive: Fertility Yoga with Anna Davis, Ph.D., RYT Review

I have "Yoga 4 Fertility" by Brenda Strong as well as "Bend, Breathe, and Conceive" by Anna Davis. Both are good but this one is my favorite. There are lots of forward bends and downward facing dog in both videos but this one has more warrior and triangle poses and other things that add more variety. The narration is terrific, making it easy to follow and the background music is pleasant and subtle. The relaxation at the end is wonderful and you're definitely not shortchanged like in other DVDs. She takes her time and walks you through 3 different relaxation poses - 2 of which are inverted, using the wall to prop you up. Just a note that you'll need some props for this exercise: block, strap and blankets. You could probably do it without the block if you're really flexible but the other 2 are essential for the relaxation poses at the end. I feel stronger and more relaxed when I finish this DVD and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Great DVD! Relaxing. - K. Woodruff -
Great DVD, perfect for anyone who wants some simple relaxing yoga. I haven't done yoga for a few months and her poses were a bit challenging at first, but felt great! I recommend this DVD to anyone looking to relieve some stress with yoga

Disappointing-Don't waste your money - Cassy - Chicago, IL
Don't waste your money. After using this video, I was more stressed than when I began. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers when they say this video is lacking. It really is hard to define what exactly it is about this video but it did nothing for me. Maybe it is because the instructor is just going through these uninspiring motions. I think she is trying hard but comes across stiff and almost military-like. No thanks.

not for beginners - Ivan's Dad -
Not for beginners. Breathing techniques are not easy to grasp. Progression of exercises, poses is very quick. Hard to follow when your head is down, and the guide is already on to the next move. However inspires huge respect for major
