For someone who has never practiced, nor even tried Yoga, this is the DVD to start with!! I've had it for about a month now and I'm slowly working my way throught the customized routines. I really enjoy the simplicity of it and the timing. I'm a stay at home mom with my 6 month old son...after his morning feeding I get started with my yoga. It works into our schedule perfectly! I started feeling slight soreness in the area that I concentrated on with a few days and my previous back pain from pregnancy?...almost gone!! Thank you! I have already recommened to family members!

Decent workouts, bit slow/boring, but a lot of content - Lena, LMT - Nassau, NY
This DVD contains about 2 workouts from 6 of their other DVDs. Production quality is decent & has good menu options including interviews, text about the instructors & about the title disc. Their site at bodywisdommedia com lists all their titles available but only a few video previews.
The workouts are very slow/relaxed with very muted simple music & a lot of narrated info since this is made for people who have never done yoga or cannot do mainstream yoga because of physical limitations.
So far I've only done the following but will add as I do them:

YOGA COMPLETE FOR EVERYONE
J.J. Gormley (50s, thin woman) instructs this series & there is an additional 6 min lesson about the basics of yoga as well as some breathing & pelvic alignment for proper back posture. It's set in a very large studio? that looks like a wealthy, old fashioned library/study w/plenty of open space complete with a fireplace behind her.
GOOD MORINING 25 min: sitting indian style, spinal flexion/extension, spinal twist, side stretching, bound angle/butterfly stretch w/o moving torso, self massaging your feet & rotating the ankles, thunderbolt pose/sitting on your heels, hero's pose/sitting butt in between heels (hard for those with tight hamstrings/quads/hips). Layind down, stretch leg up, out & across, ankle on knee to chest stretch & end in corpse pose.
OH MY ACHING NECK 30 min: laying on your back, arching & contracting back lightly, spinal twist moving knees side to side several times, basic crunch hold for little over 30 seconds, relax, slow stretched arms from outward to upward above head, neck stretching, eye muscle exercises, hands resting on top of head to relax upper torso. Sitting up, contract/flex spine, spinal twist & side stretching. Standing sun salutations 3x (feels a bit rushed), moutain, forward bend, right leg back lunge, hands/knees for cat/cow, downard dog, left leg back lunge, forward bend, moutain. Laying down, bridge pose, deep lake pose/laying down legs against a wall & moving legs wide or crossed on wall, laying down normal again neck rolls/stretches. Ends in corpse pose for 4 min, with her asking how your body is & calling out other characteristics of solids or emotions randomly.

YOGA COMPLETE FOR WEIGHT LOSS
Mary Pappas-Sandonas (30s athletic woman) does these lessons in the same place J.J. Gormley does & also gives a 7 min lecture about basic posture, how to move in/out of some poses & what to watch out, etc.
GREET THE DAY 20 min: Starts with sun salutations 3x, the 1st time slow: moutain, standing foward bend, downward dog, upward dog, downward dog, standing fwd bend, mountain. Taught slowly with a lot of detail: extended triangle pose, extended side angle pose & warrior II. ends with a long foward bend & moutain.
SEATED POSES 20 min: Start kneeling w/blankets & child's pose, sitting 1 leg head to knee stretch, sitting spinal twist. Laying down, suported/modified bridge pose using blankets that doesn't require much muscle use. Ends with sitting foot on foot spinal twist.

PILATES COMPLETE FOR INFLEXIBLE PEOPLE w/Maggie Rhoades (40-50, avg size woman)
SEATED POSES FOR THE LEGS 35 min: Sitting cross legged style, then sit with legs straight out, then back to cross, then back to straight agian & again. Butterfly w/o leaning down, then sit on heels, raise arms up, sit in between calves (hard for most people), raise arms to stretch, then sit cross legged again. Standing w/chair in front, use chair for downward dog, then use for standing fwd bend, mountain, wide legged stretch. Then sit wide legged using the chair to keep them apart & stretch to chair seat, sit w/legs out straight & stretch to chair seat. Lay down, stretch each leg up 2x. Saitting on chair, spinal twist. Sitting cross legged on floor, spinal twist. Laying down, spinal twist w/foot to knee & ends with both knees to chest spinal twist.
SPINAL WORK IN 3 DIMENSIONS 27 min: Mountain, standing fwd bend, lunge, all fours, downward dog, all fours, upward dog, downward dog, lunge, standing fwd bend, moutain, repeated one time. Laying down, cobra a few times, one side arm & leg up & other side, then alternate arm/leg up like swimmer, buth arms & legs (locust) & then child pose. Sitting in a chair, spinal twist, then sitting on floor, spinal twist. Laying down, foot to knee spinal twist, then both knees to chest spinal twist.

YOGA FOR INFLEXIBLE PEOPLE w/Judi Rice (20s, athletic woman)
BASIC 17 MIN: Sitting with legs straight, lay down with rolled sticky mat under shoulders. Laying down mountain pose, laying down eagle pose, laying down knee to chest spinal twist, hero's pose/sitting butt between feet (hard for most) & stretching arms up & also outward, ends in child's pose.
HIP OPENER 15 Min: Sitting in a chair w/wide legs, lean torso on thighs then hands on floor. Standing w/1 foot on chair, stretch/hang down, then holding foot pull it back behind butt & then do other leg. Standing fwd bend using chair. Sitting in chair, foot to knee & learn fwd. Ends in laying on floor, calves/feet on chair seat.

POWER YOGA FOR EVERY BODY (Vinyasa flow narrated by Barbara Benagh):
A 20-30s athletic man demonstrates on boring green stage w/barbara Benagh narrating & barely audible light music playing. Use of props is shown for those who need it, but not necessary if flexible.
QUIETING 20 min: reclinging butterfly, reclining leg stretch up & to sides, reclinging foot on knee stretch, reclining spinal twist, sitting spinal twist, sitting butterfly, sitting 1 leg forward stretch, sitting wide-legged stretch, sitting forward both leg stretch, slightly different sitting spinal twist & ends in kneeling.
ENERGIZING 20 min is just sun salutations modified using a chair: Moutain pose, standing foward bend using, lunge, downward dog, upward dog, standing forward bend & moutain all done with a chair 3x. Laying down on stomach relaxing, modified 1 leg up only locust pose, 1 leg & 1 arm up locust, slow tutorial step by step to cobra & ends in child's pose.

YOGA FOR ATHLETES w/Barbara Benagh narrating & same guy demonstrating
STANDING 20 MIN: long detailed traingle, warrior 2, side angle, warrior 1 & intense hip standing stretch.
STRETCHING 20 MIN: all fours, downard dog, standing fwd bend, chair/powerful pose, upward dog, staff pose/sit legs straight out & then all fours do modified push up, plank & then go closer to ground (hard), boat & ends with child's pose.

I was also disappointed with this DVD, as is seemed to be a popular choice among amazon shoppers. I think the title, "Yoga for Beginners" is misleading, as this DVD contains many advanced yoga routines. Also, on the back of the DVD it said it contained a "Core Workout 20 Min." but no such workout is actually on the DVD!

I purchase the "Pilates for Inflexible People" at the same time as this DVD, and I much prefer it. Although, I wish I'd known that two of the workouts from the pilates DVD were on the yoga DVD before I bought them both.




Too Much Too Little - D. Sherman -
I did not like this DVD at all. It requires too many props such as bricks, belts, towels, blankets, chairs, etc... Each pose takes too long due to lengthy explanations. As a beginner I find this too boring and studio based and unable keep my attention. I feel it was a waste of money and don't recommend it.

Great Price for $9.44

Yoga for Athletes Review



I have had this video for some time and feel compelled to leave a 5 star review. I am a runner and have done yoga on and off for about 7 years. After I moved, the yoga center was too far away and I found this routine to very close to the work out I would get in a Level 1 - 2 class. If it's a good day, I do it all and if it's not a perfect day, I can step out of a sun salutation; you can make it fit you too. Overall, I know from experience that doing this routine at least once a week helps my flexibility and running. Kimberly is very positive and helping. And after doing this video so many time, I almost feel like I should know my "classmates". This is my favorite yoga video and I would buy another one with different arrangements if it existed.

Insulting to an ancient and revered tradition - L. Moss - AL, USA
I am extremely offended by the blurbs used on the cover of this DVD: "No chanting. No granola. No sanskrit." I consider them to be racial slurs that are disrespectful to the history of yoga and its rich cultural tradition. If someone wants to produce a practice DVD that strips the substance from the form because they think will successfully reach a market niche, the least they could do is come up with a way to advertise their product that is more respectful to the meaningful content they stripped out. I'm returning this DVD without opening it.

If you want a technically sound yoga workout that skips the incense and incanting, you want Fowler's Yoga for Athletes. I've met several elite athletes who use Fowler's workout in their sports conditioning regimens. You can take it easy doing the series, or work up a serious sweat--whichever works for you. The poses are easy to follow, which I appreciate, and they're clearly demonstrated. If you've wanted to try yoga for a while but have been put off by all the preciousness, you're in luck. Yoga Challenge I, Hatha Yoga with Tony Sanchez Review



I've tried many different Yoga videos over the years, believing Yoga is good for me and wanting to succeed at doing Yoga. This is only one that appeals to me. It's quiet, the person giving the directions has good timing as far as the step by step procedure for getting into and out of the poses, as well as giving hints like "remember to breath" just as I am starting to hold my breath. The modified versions done by the other 2 are also very helpful.

I had the book by Bikram, "Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class" for a couple of years before purchasing Tony's Yoga Challenge on VHS. I would highly suggest getting both that book and this DVD. (No difference between VHS tape and DVD, I just needed it on DVD now) The book is funny, and gives lots of encouragement with pictures of others doing the poses starting out, and how they look later. Also explains why you are doing the pose, and what the benefits are. The exercises are NOT in the same order on this DVD, and a few (really hard ones) are not on the DVD. Tony is a student of Bikram Choundrey. (sp?)

This is not exciting to do, and you do need an hour+. Don't let that turn you off from buying this DVD. It very easy to get addicted to doing something so quiet. By just listening to the directions, and concentrating, the time goes by faster than you would think. I do admit to sometimes skipping all the laying down between some of floor exercises, but I know I shouldn't!

When I do this at least every other day, (I do weight training the other days) I feel energized, and sleep better. My chronic aches and pains, like an achilles tendon injury, lower back injury, as well as upper back area that knots up, all disappear. I can tell if I skip 2 days, I start hurting.

My husband has started doing it also, he has degenerative back pain. He is also finding relief.

This type of Yoga has the emphasis on the spine functioning at it's best. If your spine is strong and in alignment, the rest of your body will be healthy too.

It does work your whole body, it is NOT easy, but anyone can do this, just do the poses the best you can.

Try it. Give it an honest try, do your best, and start feeling better.

Closest video to Bikram's Yoga - Michelle Ami - Manhattan Beach, CA
I've taken Bikram's Yoga for a couple of years and I love it. I've been searching for a Bikram's Yoga DVD so I can practice at home but have been unable to find one. This DVD is great! Although this is NOT a Bikram's Yoga DVD, the instruction/practice is VERY similar to Bikram's. What I especially like about this DVD is it's almost like being in a Bikram's class (minus the heat); no bright lights, fancy backgrounds, and the people in the DVD look like actual students--they aren't glammed-out with fancy make-up and hair. It's simple and to the point. This DVD has three different levels. If you're a beginner, I suggest taking a couple of Bikram's classes or a yoga class that's similar in practice because the instructors will make sure you're practicing proper form, which is essential in getting the maximum benefits to all the exercises (plus it'll help prevent injuries and strain). My advice is start slow and know your limitations. You'll notice improvement in your flexibility and balance after about 4 workouts. I'm glad I found this DVD!

Yoga DVD

Yoga DVDs are great tools to help you, your yoga practice at home or learn yoga before going to a class. But sometimes it is difficult to practice a DVD of a yoga, because the time people like to be in pace That Different postures and a yoga teacher can be used to slow or enough.

This can be especially strategies of yoga, as Yin Yoga. In this style > Yoga The idea is to keep the fabric in a position that is specific to working with the connective tissue and joints. With aging, the connective tissue of our body will get firmer and 'dry', aching and cracking as we move. like why is the length of time that may, in an attitude varies considerably depending on which joints with which we cooperate, as we feel that day and what the body is in the history of that part of our body.

One way around this if you want this form of> Yoga is, you have a series of photos of the positions you want to use first. And 'better if a Yin yoga teacher will help you best work out routine, but can do even if you are sensitive and pay attention to your body as you test. It's never OK to feel the pain! You must then wait for a timer and image in front of you on the first posture, press the start button and the timer can position over time.

Set upminute or two at first. They seem like an eternity! Once you use then to your choice of flow of postures you can extend the time you spend at any relaxation and even on it "right." Just keep relaxed until you are comfortable with the position and then breathing softly and quietly in a semi-meditative. Your body relaxes and return, as does this and breathing becomes more profound in its impact that move the body in a relaxed yet alert.

YouTop view of what I wrote that a DVD of practice where the pace is dictated not apply to this type of work. Having said that I make an exception where Paul Grilley Yin Yoga DVD is superior to. This is a good watch to really understand the practice in some depth, but once this is done, I think it is best to use with your body and your guide and pace your practice to your needs. Enjoy your Yin Yoga.Your body will thank you so much!

When people tell me that yoga is only good for stretching, but doesn't improve cardio fitness, I recommend this video. Done slowly, the Sun Salutations are great for endurance, flexibility, and strength. Done more quickly, you add the benefit of cardio exercise.

I love this video because Peggy breaks down the Saluations into an easy to learn flow.

The chair version of Sun Saluation on this video also makes the Sun Saluation accessible to people who cannot work comfortably on the floor. This is also a great start for people who need to improve their flexibility, but need to start with a variation that is doable and then work their way into more advanced version. (And as trainers know, being successful is motivating.)

First thing in the morning I start with the chair version and then move on to the floor version as I limber up a bit.

During my last physical, my doctor noted that I had lost 11 lbs. in the last year. I told her it was my morning Sun Saluations.

I am resuming yoga practice after many years. I found Peggy Cappy's dvds and book, and I ordered this dvd as well. I have (at 58) issues with stiff places, sore places and cannot do some poses without modifications. I wanted to learn Sun Salutation, but I am not able to get up and down from the floor to do this the usual way..Peggy's dvd will enable me to learn Sun Salute and still gain the benefits of the pose..she is a caring and patient teacher.

I'm more likely to work out, if I don't have to set-up a place on the floor, get the mat, etc. If you don't use a mat, you need to be careful, or your feet can slip. Saw this on the PBS show, and I'm glad I did. I do the exercises holding on to the computer desk. Highly recommended.

I enjoy all of Peggy Cappy's yoga programs, however, this one which is mostly sun salutations should have had a warning that someone with wrist issues will be unable to perform it. Weight bearing on the wrists is required.

Yogilates - Intermediate Workout Review



This is a fabulous workout. I have both the beginners and intermediate and Jonathon's gentle and detailed instructions for the poses are very kind and easy to follow. He is very likable and you do work up a sweat. I would probably recommend doing this DVD in a heated room so as to really get into the streches. Overall this was a great buy and I will be looking forward to getting the next DVD from Jonathon.

The level of instruction on this DVD is perfect for me - my only comment is the poses on this DVD are very rushed. In my local yoga class there is smooth transition between the poses. On this DVD you only hold a pose for a few moments before rushing to the next one - wish I could devise a smooth method to hit the pause button to really enjoy. Good instruction - but only watched the DVD once because of this hurried approach.

Kundalini yoga instructor and wellness consultant Kristen Eykel offers this short yoga routine for Back, one of five DVDs in her 12-Minute Yoga Emergency Series. The Back practice (alternatively titled "Mid & Low Back") is 12 minutes long, the majority of which is performed on the floor. Eykel begins in easy pose with a seated spinal rock forward and back. She continues with spinal circles before moving onto hands and knees for both cat/cow and lateral spinal bends. Down dog is next, with Eykel adding a bent-knee stretch (a.k.a. "crazy dog"); this is followed by a side stretch. Eykel then incorporates what appears to be a Kundalini yoga exercise, as it involves rolling up from a squat to a standing position several times. Standing, Eykel moves through hip circles, chest circles, and finally, an upright version of the spinal rock before concluding with "sat nam."

Following the yoga routine, there is an approximately 11-minute meditation for Back (about 2 minutes of guided relaxation continuing with 8 minutes of nature sounds) There are three Stressbusters on this DVD, each about a minute long: 1) Breathing, an overview of diaphragmatic breathing, 2) Gardening, extolling the benefits of gardening as a hobby, and 3) TV & Stress, which recommends avoiding TV at night in order to improve sleep. Overall, this Back DVD offers the option of a short yoga workout addressing an area that can often become problematic for many. Eykel does not necessarily include the same yoga postures that are often seen in other yoga DVDs targeted to the back (e.g., reclined leg stretch); perhaps because of her Kundalini background, the routine that she presents here is a bit more dynamic, yet still generally accessible for most levels.

Easy and relaxing Yoga - Jason Tucker - North Carolina
Usually yoga is a hard workout and even harder to stick with a routine. One of the great things about this series is the flexibility you get. The workouts are 12 minutes, and can be combined if you want a more in-depth routine, but if you are after a fast way to raise your metabolism and flexibility, then you only need 12 minutes at a time. The DVD also gives you different options for performing each difficult move, so for beginners like me, I can find a way to follow along without falling over :)

This movie is about India, it is far from the normal genre of movies about Yoga and India. This movie has little dialog and lots of scenes that really make you think and go inside. Its absoluetly not for the squemish as it shows a cremation from start to finish and numerous dead bodies (Agora's) It is a very deep movie and makes one think about our own mortality. It shows Inda as it actually is, and not the spiced up version, only showing the "pretty places". I would not show this movie to young childern without watching it first and making a decision about how you want to explain it to them. Overall, I am still thinking about various points and will take me a long time to digest the immense amount of material in this movie. A must for people that are serious about yoga and enlightenment.

vacation video pretending to be a documentary - Marcy Harbut -
This movie is trying to teach something, but it's too disjointed and cheaply produced to really make any point, other than to offer glimpses of Indian daily spiritual life. I imagined the filmmakers being a couple of tourists traveling through the country with a small camera, spontaneously filming whatever they came across and then packaging it as a "documentary."

The last straw for me was a scene filmed at Kovalam Beach in Kerala of several local fisherman are pulling a giant fishing net out of the water. I actually spent a few days at that same beach in 2007. I watched that same group of fisherman bring in that net. What does this have to do with yoga? Absolutely nothing. It's just what the filmmakers happened to see while spending time in a touristy part of the country.



Shock value - Aloha Slim - Maui, HI USA
This DVD was a big disappointment. Shock value in the footage and a weak storyline for one of the world's richest traditions. I also bought 'Origins of Yoga' at the same time and have enjoyed it very much, as it is a fine general representation of the tradition, and presents many authentic Indian yogis living today.
